Legacy Atmospheric Sounding Data Set Project

For nearly half a century, field experiments have been conducted from the tropics to the polar regions involving intensive observations of atmosphere, ocean, and land processes over selected locations of interest around the globe. The atmospheric component of field program data sets that tends to have the greatest long-term value to the science community is that provided by atmospheric sounding systems. These observations are used most commonly for diagnostic studies for the development of cloud parameterizations for weather and climate models, and calibration and validation of independent data sets. Many of these data are also used in special model reanalysis efforts. Upper-air data sets from field programs are generally of higher quality because the large suite of instruments deployed in these field campaigns allows for cross-calibration that can greatly enhance data accuracy. With the passing of time, there is a danger that some of these datasets will be difficult to find.
Due to the usefulness and importance of these sounding datasets and in consideration to the enormous investment to collect them, a collaborative data stewardship effort involving the Earth Observing Laboratory (EOL) at the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) and the Department of Atmospheric Science at Colorado State University (CSU) is underway to:
|
|
|
A 9-track tape.
|
- Identify past field programs for which central collections of sounding data do not exist,
- Track down existing holdings of sounding data for those field programs, to the extent they exist, at centers, laboratories, and universities,
- Extract sounding data that are found on old storage media (i.e., 9-track tapes, printouts, etc.), and place into a consistent, easily-read, digital format,
- Carry out standard quality control of the sounding data including objective gross limit and vertical consistency checks, and
- Prepare a catalog and a central, publicly accessible archive of the sounding data (probably at NCAR and/or NCDC).

The table below is a lists of field programs with upper-air sonde datasets. This list is incomplete with missing entries and datasets that have not be located. A question mark in a table entry indicates that a dataset was known to exist but has not been located. The entry "digital" means the dataset has been located in an ASCII digital form, whereas "digital coded" means the dataset has been located in digital form which we have not yet been able to decode (e.g., binary EBCDIC). As additional information becomes available, this table will be updated and corrected with links provided to each dataset.
We are requesting the assistance of the atmospheric science community to help us in this process, and in particular, to locate missing datasets which are in ASCII digital form. Though our primary interest is in upper-air sonde data, as other supporting datasets and/or documentation are found (e.g., surface, aircraft, radar, ect) links will provided to these as well. An active link under the experiment name indicates that a web page has been set up with additional information on that field program.
Please use the information below this table to contact us.

VORTEX-SE Data Submission Instructions
The VORTEX-SE home page contains relevant links to project and data documentation, distributed data access, and other collaborating projects' data sets.
An initial master list of all VORTEX-SE international data sets (with links) has been compiled to provide easy access to all VORTEX-SE data sets (both operational and research). Data sets are grouped by platform and sorted by data type (i.e., aerosol, cloud properties, radar, satellite, etc.). This list will be updated frequently. It is available directly at VORTEX-SE Master List.
If you collected data for VORTEX-SE, please review this list to verify that your data set(s) are properly named with the appropriate Principal Investigators (PIs) identified. Please e-mail any corrections, additions, or deletions directly to Scot Loehrer. If you already have your data sets available on-line, please provide the web link or FTP access information. Once your data set (with metadata) is available, a link will be provided from the master list web page along with a submission date to track future data set upgrades or revisions (if needed).
Please submit your data set(s) (including accompanying metadata or documentation files) to the VORTEX-SE Long-term Data Archive at NCAR Earth Observing Laboratory. Data set (and metadata) documentation guidelines are available by direct link at: VORTEX-SE Data Set Documentation Guidelines.
To expedite matters, the EOL has established an anonymous FTP capability to accept your VORTEX-SE data set(s). The Internet address is:
FTP: ftp.eol.ucar.edu
Login: anonymous (No password required.)
cd /pub/data/incoming/vortex-se (NOTE: This command should be done all in one step.)
It is very important to send an e-mail to Scot Loehrer indicating that the data file(s) have been FTPed, along with the file(s) names, data contact information, any data restrictions, and appropriate file documentation (i.e., authorship information including corresponding author(s), data formats, descriptions, acknowledgments, and metadata). Documentation files may be e-mailed to Scot Loehrer directly if preferred.
Password protection is available for this data set upon request. The data set will not be password protected unless requested at the time of submission. If password protection is requested, you will receive a project-specific "user ID" and "password." If you require additional security, please contact Scot Loehrer to request a unique "user ID" and "password" for your data. For users without direct Internet access, or if your data set(s) are too large to FTP, you may send digital file(s) on magnetic or optical media (with documentation) by conventional mail to the EOL shipping address below.
Thank you very much for your assistance in providing final data to the VORTEX-SE archive. Feel free to contact the EOL Data Archive should you encounter any problems or have any questions.
Data Set Documentation Guidelines
VORTEX-SE Data Policy
Environmental data and information, collected and/or created under NOAA grants/cooperative agreements must be made visible, accessible, and independently understandable to general users, free of charge or at minimal cost, in a timely manner (typically no later than two (2) years after the data are collected or created), except where limited by law, regulation, policy or by security requirements.
