SAVE-78

Stratospheric Aerosol Validation Experiment - 1978

PROJECT DATES
11/17/1978 - 11/25/1978
Project Location
Sondrestrom, Greenland
PROJECT DESCRIPTION

The Stratospheric Aerosol Validation Experiment (SAVE) took place in two short periods: November 1978 and July 1979. These periods were planned to coincide with field measurement programs to obtain “ground truth” observations for validation of the Stratospheric Aerosol Measurement (SAM) II sensor on the Applications Explorer Mission (AEM) B satellite. The SAM II sensor determined the vertical profiles of aerosol extinction parameters by solar occupation techniques. This project took place near the Fairbanks area in Alaska where vertical distributions of aerosol particles were observed in the 10 ~ 30km interval using airborne lidar and balloon borne sensors as a means of certification and comparison with the satellite instrument.
