MITTS
Monitoring the Intensification and Track of Tropical Storms
The MITTS (Monitoring the Intensification and Track of Tropical Storms) project supported NOAA operational hurricane tracking and observations while the NOAA G-IV aircraft was undergoing repairs. The NSF/NCAR GV was equipped with AVAPS to take observations of developing and mature tropical systems in the tropics. Based out of RMMA, CO, the GV flew missions at the request of NOAA. The data collected directly supported operational forecasters and modeling efforts, helping improve predictions of tropical storm intensity and track.
