APAR SUPPORTS NSF STRATEGIC GOALS

The APAR implementation and operations will enhance research infrastructure for the NSF community and meet the first two NSF Strategic Goals:  i) Expand knowledge in science, engineering, and learning; and ii) Advance the capability of the nation to meet current and future challenges (NSF, 2018a).  Through collaboration with industry and government leaders, APAR will advance the NSF Agency Priority Goal to expand public and private partnerships to enhance the impact of NSF’s investments and contribute to American economic competitiveness and security.

APAR ADDRESSES SCIENTIFIC CHALLENGES

Through collaboration with industry and government leaders, APAR, in combination with other measurement capabilities on the NSF/NCAR C-130 aircraft, will address a number of scientific challenges outlined in the NCAR Strategic Plan, including water cycle, cloud-radiation interactions, and certain aspects of climate studies. Specifically, APAR will contribute to the first and fifth strategic goals for NCAR: Improve understanding of the atmosphere, the Earth System, and the sun and provide world-class ground, airborne, and space-borne observational facilities and services. Deployment of APAR on the NSF/NCAR C-130 aircraft will also enable validation of remote estimates of dynamical and microphysical retrievals with in-situ measurements from aircraft.
