Abstract The preservation and accessibility of historical geoscience observations are crucial for advancing Earth system science research. However, many valuable datasets collected over decades are at risk of being lost due to degradation of physical media and fading institutional knowledge. To address this need, this white paper proposes the establishment of the NCAR Observational Recovery and Integration of Geoscience Information for New Science (ORIGINS) Center. The ORIGINS Center will systematically identify, preserve, digitize, and make accessible legacy observations, unlocking their potential to support new scientific discoveries, longitudinal research, and data-driven applications in AI/ML. By leveraging NCAR's expertise in long-term data curation and existing legacy holdings, the center will ensure that these invaluable data are preserved for future generations, maximizing the return on investments made in collecting them and benefiting scientific research and society.
