Broadband radiometers (Eppley)

Short Name or Variable Name
Eppley PSP and PIR

Total visible (short-wave) radiation and infrared (long-wave) radiation in a hemisphere.  Often deployed in pairs to measure radiation incoming and outgoing from the surface.

ISFS has added microprocessor-based A/D boards inside each of these sensors to save and apply the calibration coefficients.

Calibration Methods

PSP are calibrated by NOAA/GMD against standard pyranometers on their roof.

PIR (pyrgeometers) are calibrated in the EOL calibration laboratory using a dual temperature-controlled oil bath.

The calibration coefficients for each sensor are loaded into an onboard microprocessor.
