Biography

Holger Vömel is a Senior Scientist in the Earth Observing Laboratory (EOL) of the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, U.S.A.  Holger studies atmospheric water vapor and ozone, tropical tropopause processes and the measurements of upper air trace gases. He places a strong focus on high accuracy measurement technologies that are used to study short term processes and long-term changes of our atmosphere. He works with balloon borne and airborne vertical profiling instrumentation that cover the troposphere and lower stratosphere. His work spans dropsonde observations in all atmospheric conditions from tropical cyclones to polar boundary layers, toresearch of upper tropospheric and stratospheric water vapor and ozone. His observations feed models from short term weather forecasting to long-term chemistry and climate models. 

Background

Holger received a degree in Physics (Diplom) from the Ruprecht Karl University of Heidelberg, Germany, and a PhD in Chemical Physics from the University of Colorado at Boulder. Before joining NCAR, Holger has worked at the Meteorological Observatory in Lindenberg, Germany, where he started the GCOS Reference Upper Air Network (GRUAN) Lead Center and at the University of Colorado and NOAA, where he led the long-term record of stratospheric water vapor.

Holger has built the Cryogenic Frostpoint Hygrometer and contributed to many radiosonde and dropsonde developments. He has spent a winter in Antarctica and conducted research at research stations from the tropics to the high Arctic. He has participated in over 50 national and international field campaigns in all continents as principal investigator and as co-investigator.
