197: STATUS /none Thu 25-Aug-1994 20:41:49 GMT README: Maintainance tasks:
README: Maintainance tasks:

(Tom suggested that John and I document the problems we've had
and solutions in one logbook entry so that other NCAR staff
will have one place to look.)

Flux ATI Sonics: (Other sonics seem to be mostly okay.)
We have had intermittent bad spiking on one or the other
during the entire time we've been here. Generally,
the sonics work when the weather is good. Various
	things to try are:
	- Cycle power on the electronics boxes. This sometimes
helps, even though I don't know why. However,
problems sometimes reappear after a while.
	- Climb the tower and dry the transducers with a paper
towel. Unfortunately, when the tower is dry
enough to climb, the sonics generally have
		dried also.
	- As long as you are up the tower, reseat the transducers.
This often helps, though again I don't know why.
I've never seen moisture in the connectors. ATI
cautions us not to screw the transducers too much
since it can break the wiring inside of the array
(which is expensive and time consuming to replace).
	- Adjust the signal reception by following Section 6 of the
ATI manual (the last 2 faxed pages). This should
be done with a zero chamber on the path being checked.
If a major change is required, the zeroing procedure
in Section 4.6 should be done. If the signal
cannot be made to look like the diagram on page 22,
replace one or both transducers. I have adjusted
all of the electronics, though they already looked
		pretty good.

While looking at the scope, note if interference
occurs. (This appears as a signal which occasionally
moves through the display which is not synchronized
to the receive waveform.) We have seen some evidence
of interference even though the sonic cables are routed
on legs of the tower separate from the other signal
cables (and each other). Another source of bad signals
is poor grounding. The arrays and electronics both
should be grounded. I've just made a crude ground
connection, but a better ground rod should be used.

	Other acts of desperation:
	- Reseat the main sonic cable at both ends. The electronics
box end is easy. The array end requires that the
array be removed from the boom (remember to leave
some slack in the Fast T wiring) and the connector
removed (by pulling back on the knurled sleave)
while holding the array [all of this done while
hanging out at 10 or 15m]. We haven't seen that
this difficult task has helped at all.
	- Reseat the boards in the electronics box. We tried this
		with no noticable effect.

Kryptons: Periodically (at least weekly, or whenever the output signal
is unreasonably high), clean both lenses. I've been using
a cotton swab kept in a baggie with distilled water to scrub
the lenses and then drying with a dry swab.

We've had problems which look like electronic noise (large
spikes in dry conditions and white noise in the humidity
spectra) with the 10m unit. I've just completely torn this
apart and rebuilt the source tube housing in an attempt
	to correct this.

Psycs: We've had a lot of these die, presumably because of moisture
in one or more of the connectors (probably in the boom).
Tony and Steve caulked the tower side of the boom and the
other ends appear to be capped, so we are still puzzled.
We've just been swapping them out with ones that we have
spare (though we used them up, so now we're trying to fix
	the ones we have also).

We've also seen several levels with systematically high
or low T and RH. All of the T's now appear to be good,
but one "spare" unit is low by 1 C (it is so labeled).
The 15m RH is low by about 2%, and the 12.5m is high by
about 2%, but since this is within
specifications, we are leaving it alone. I would suggest
an intercomparison as part of tear-down. John and I also
have been playing with a "hauling-line" probe using another
psyc for in situ comparisons, but finding another psyc,
shield, and cables has been a problem.

Props: One of these had the old speed-goes-to-0 problem, but since
we didn't have a spare, we swapped it down to 2.5m. It
seems to be working okay there, but it is hard to tell
since the speeds are light and variable below the canopy
anyway. Every time I've looked at cockpit, the signal
	has been fluctuating.

ADAMS: marigold crashed several times during the first part of
our shift. It hasn't crashed since we started a policy
of only running one cockpit at a time. Possibly having
multiple copies of cockpit loaded down ingest.

When marigold dies, the only sure way to restart is to
disconnect the solent and FSSP serial cables (marked
with red tape), cycle marigold power with the key (leave
in the lock since the tumbler is loose), and reconnect
the cables once ingest has started. We recommend
IMMEDIATELY starting cockpit to ensure that all channels
are coming in. In particular, the baro also tends to
die during a marigold reboot and may need to be disconnected
	and reconnected.

Backups: bkfiles now deletes the data in raw_data/backup as the
first step. This eliminates the need to run bkfiles_kill
and keeps all of the previous day's data on disk (and
thus available to the OSU folks).

We are now backing up the whole system every week to
avoid losing critical information (such as configs and
logbook - see below) if we have a system crash. Do this
using /usr/local/adm/backup/backup and make an entry
	the backup logbook.

The last status file for each ADAM often does not get
completely backed up by bk_files (0, rather than 48 bytes).

Software:
Logbook has been acting up. The problem may be	related
to people deleting comments, so avoid this. Also, remember to
terminate all comments with a "return". Make index also
hasn't fixed this problem. It may be necessary to edit
index.cmt to get logbook running again.

LiCOR CO2: We see zero calibrations embedded
in the co2 signal when using prep (or fun.plot.prep), since
prep first calls the calibration routines and then applies
time shifts. Covar does the opposite, so the calibrations
don't seem to be a problem in the statistics. (But some
software person may want to play with cleaning this up
more. Note the delays in prep.config and the "WAIT_NSAMP"
for good data parameter in licor_mode.c if you want to
	work on this.)

Cables: Periodically check baggies containing cable splices for
water. We found some in the ati.flux power cables
	early on.

Radiometers: We changed the dessicant in pyg.out (which was
turning white), but not in pyg.in since it was difficult
to reach from the precariously-perched ladder. This
may have to be done before the end of the project.

Air conditioner: The compressor in the data trailer reportedly
is squealing. We have been keeping the chem trailer
outside door open during the day with both air conditioners
off and running the chem trailer air conditioner during
	the night.

Strange channels: chanA, chanB, and chanC.peter have been used
by Peter for several things. Originally, these were
used for a reference psychrometer he had, but are now
monitoring Licor flow and temperature. They are still
	being archived in psyc/.

The h2o2.seat channel (reserved for an instrument
which was never deployed) was used for c.pvm.10m.walk
during an intercomparison here and now is not being used.

par sensors. These used to be near the daisy stump,
all looking up and E&W.can.par embedded in the canopy.
Yesterday we moved them so that sky.par is upward-looking
on the sawhorse, W.can.par is downward-looking on the
sawhorse, and E.can.par is in the canopy underneath.

Soil moisture: Tony said that this should be done 1-2 times each
shift using samples from his grotto. We've only done
	one.
