The profiler d: drive was 99.2% full. Talked with Bill,
and he had me remove spectral files up to day 93 from the
backed up directory.
We also observed that the autorun xcopy was not running.
He had me run it manually, and it copied days 101 through 111
to the CD drive.
The CD drive has 95MB available, and so it will only
hold another day of spectra. Bill suggested that we
leave it in to see if the autorun runs tomorrow. After that,
the CD will need to be changed.
This site needs CD cases.

Surface:
Radiation didn't seem to drop out yesterday. Lou had a spare opto isolator and I swapped that yesterday. We'll see if it stays that way.
Aspiration working, guy wires attatched, surface values reasonable and anemometer turning. No obvious drop outs in surface data.
PROFILER:
Profiler looks like it ran all night. RASS most of the night because of par file change done last eve from clr105 to turb105 because of folding and dop vel exceeding max. See other post by James. Beam angles and rass quiet corrected by me this morning.
PROF disk 81% full at 12:30 140404 utc. We may have to clear some data off before end of project.
SOUNDINS':
Yesterday there were 3 soundin's and today there will be at least 2. Soundings have been going well. This mornings 12Z I couldn't get to the regulator so I had to fill by size which was a LOT OF JUICE! dz 8 m/s! Top that LOU!
12 z Sounding winds right out of 270 for the entire flt. Sounding heading almost straight east.
- 102: GENERAL, Site MISS IND ARPT, Wed 14-Apr-2004 01:43:31 GMT, MISS iss restart
I accidently killed one of the Zebra windows, don't know which one, it
was probably the taskbar. The windowing system got all fouled up
and wouldn't take input. Had to power cycle the computer to get
it back to life. Data outage of about 10 minutes for surface
obs.
- 101: GENERAL, Site MISS IND ARPT, Wed 14-Apr-2004 00:57:23 GMT, MISS Profiler Parameter File Change
Changed par file to turb_105.par because sounding showed winds
above 3000 m above 20 m s-1 from 290 deg.
- 96: GENERAL, Site MISS IND ARPT, Tue 13-Apr-2004 00:27:50 GMT,
Two of the met tower guy wires were hanging loose today, when the turnbuckles
came apart. We hooked them back up and secured with duct tape.

- 93: GENERAL, Site MISS IND ARPT, Sat 10-Apr-2004 19:39:52 GMT, installed small fan in MISS trailer
Installed another small fan in the small window in the front of the MISS
trailer to try to keep it cool in the afternoon. Max since last setting
was 93F. Currently 78F. Outside air temp about 23 C.
Note: all MAPR data through 9 April is backed up on DVDs.
- 92: GENERAL, Site MISS IND ARPT, Fri 09-Apr-2004 22:09:42 GMT, phone service resumed
It appears the Verizon cell phone service started working again
around 2:30 PM. (21:30 UT.)
- 91: GENERAL, Site MISS IND ARPT, Fri 09-Apr-2004 19:34:46 GMT, long-distance phone & internet service from Bishop ceased
Long-distance phone service from ops center and hotel, and
Verizon service and internet from Bishop ceased this morning
at about 10:30 AM during the middle of our daily conference call.
Plan is to launch sondes at 0 and 12 Z on 10 April for IOP#11.
The 0 Z sonde will be for training purposes and the 12 Z will be
the first of a "limited" IOP on Saturday.
Shane can still be reached on his personal T-Mobile number:
303-359-2083.
- 90: GENERAL, Site MISS IND ARPT, Wed 07-Apr-2004 22:43:08 GMT, Temperature inside MISS trailer getting warm
Temperature on the wall in the MISS trailer is 86.9F and says its
been as high as 95.9F. Called Mike and Lou and apparently there
is no solution except leaving the door open and the little fans
running.
- 89: GENERAL, Site MISS IND ARPT, Tue 06-Apr-2004 22:31:19 GMT, Tuesday, 6 April 2004: Project update
Weather sunny and beautiful--but not good for rotors or waves.
Therefore, PIs decided to call 7 and 8 April "down days".
Next discussion to be held at the ops center at 10 AM on 8 April.
- 85: GENERAL, Site MISS IND ARPT, Mon 05-Apr-2004 01:07:54 GMT, MISS communications re-established
Kerio Winroute software license expired yesterday and halted communications
back to NCAR. Shane worked with Gary to enter license number and re-
establish link. No data were lost and plots on web will be updated soon.
- 78: GENERAL, Site MISS IND ARPT, Thu 01-Apr-2004 01:13:30 GMT, MISS Moved to Independence Airport
Moved MISS back to Independence Airport.
Started system about 0UT April 1.
Profiler orientation is 48 degrees and sited close to the airport shipping container to try to minimize clutter from trees in town.
Perhaps a little less clutter apparent than previously, but the KVH appears to be baised. We corrected for this with a manual compass sighting.
Motosat link was down while at the Onion Valley site, so no data uploads until set up at the Airport.
- 74: GENERAL, Site MISS East Valley, Tue 30-Mar-2004 01:25:42 GMT, MISS moved to West Valley
MISS shutdown at Independence Airport 21:15 UT March 29
and moved to Onion Valley Road site number 5, started up 0:30 UT March 30.
This will be the MISS site for IOP #9 which runs March 18 UT to March 31 6 UT.
This site is 4.0 miles up Onion Valley road from Hwy 395 and is on gently sloping ground. We are about 50 m south of the road on a pullout.
There are small rocky hills to the east and and south east which should block interference from MAPR and Independence.
There are scattered trees to the north and mountains nearby to the west.
The instruments came up okay, however the atmospheric signal is very weak (RH is only 12%) and the profiler is picking up lots of clutter. We tried both 60 and 105 m modes, 105m seemed slightly better.
The Moto-Sat is not locking on to any satellites, perhaps because the Camper is sloping slightly and so the antenna orientation is out.

MISS trailer orientation 38 d magantic, 52 deg true.
- 61: GENERAL, Site MISS IND ARPT, Wed 24-Mar-2004 13:18:56 GMT, Wednesday March 24 : IOP #7
IOP #7 Mar 24 6Z (22PST) to 18Z (10PST).
MISS at Independence Airport and MGAOS at Fresno.
MISS soundings at 12Z (4PST), and MGAOS soundings at 6Z, 12Z, and 18Z.
Light variable winds, strong westerlies aloft produced some high bands of wave clouds, but doesn't appear to have mixed down.
MISS Profiler winds switched from southerly to northerly around midnight.
MISS surface met Campbell down for about an hour from 1030UT.
- 56: GENERAL, Site MISS IND ARPT, Tue 23-Mar-2004 11:12:40 GMT, Tuesday March 23 : IOP #6
IOP #6 Mar 23 0Z (16PST) to 12Z (4PST).
MISS at Independence Airport and MGAOS at Fresno.
MISS soundings at 6Z (22PST) and 12Z (4PST), and MGAOS soundings at 0Z, 6Z, 9Z, and 12Z. The MISS 6Z sounding only recorded winds to around 800mb.
Initally expected to be a strong event, like previous events this one peaked earlier and was weaker than the inital forcasts. However this event did appear to mix down to the surface with a period of surface westerlies at MISS 2Z to 4Z peaking around 8 m/s. During this time the profiler saw southwesterlies up to 1km, southeasterlies 1 - 2.5km, and westerlies around 3km. There were strong updrafts around the beginning and end of the surface westerlies.
The event was weaker at the MAPR site.
- 50: GENERAL, Site MISS at MAPR, Mon 22-Mar-2004 01:30:10 GMT, MISS MAPR Intercomparison ended
Mar 21, 21UT ended MAPR MISS intercomparison and moved MISS to Independence Airport.
- 48: GENERAL, Site MISS at MAPR, Sat 20-Mar-2004 03:05:38 GMT, MISS and MAPR Intercomparison
MISS was relocated to the MAPR site and is now about 100 m west of MAPR.
Latitude is 36d 43m 29s, Longitude is 118d 8m 7s, Altitude is 1169m.
The MISS profiler and MAPR are in alternating mode, with MISS operating for the first 30 minutes of each hour and MAPR for the second 30 minutes. Both profilers are using 100 m 4 bit code pulses.
MISS is currently not running RASS, nor the surface met instruments. The MISS radiation sensors are operating.
The intercomparison will continue until at least Sunday afternoon.
