74: GENERAL, Site MISS East Valley, Tue 30-Mar-2004 01:25:42 GMT, MISS moved to West Valley
MISS shutdown at Independence Airport 21:15 UT March 29
and moved to Onion Valley Road site number 5, started up 0:30 UT March 30.

This will be the MISS site for IOP #9 which runs March 18 UT to March 31 6 UT.

This site is 4.0 miles up Onion Valley road from Hwy 395 and is on gently sloping ground. We are about 50 m south of the road on a pullout.

There are small rocky hills to the east and and south east which should block interference from MAPR and Independence.

There are scattered trees to the north and mountains nearby to the west.

The instruments came up okay, however the atmospheric signal is very weak (RH is only 12%) and the profiler is picking up lots of clutter. We tried both 60 and 105 m modes, 105m seemed slightly better.

The Moto-Sat is not locking on to any satellites, perhaps because the Camper is sloping slightly and so the antenna orientation is out.

MISS trailer orientation 38 d magantic, 52 deg true.

Used 30 cf Helium. Very windy at launch, managed to hit surface tower dead
center with balloon. Balloon continues on its way, with the sonde attached.
No adverse affects. T/RH data looks good on descent also. Good aim, good flight.

27: DAILY, Site MISS East Valley, Wed 10-Mar-2004 19:59:50 GMT, Daily Wednesday March 10, 2004 IOP#2
IOP#2 today

Problems starting profiler. Replacing keyboard fixed.
Started profiler at 19:12Z. Any earlier profiler data prior may have bad
angles and from just a few dwells. 60m mode up. 10m/s Nyquist. No RASS

Launched sonde at 19:30
Surface met up at 19:43
Second sonde at 21:30

Today's IOP was originally scheduled for 21Z to 15Z tomorrow morning. The
forecast has a short wave bringing Easterly winds, with a possible wave
event. The IOP was changed to begin earlier (forecast changed).

The observed winds from sounding were northeasterly above the mountains.
Vertical motions in the profiler data but not clear wave motion.(Deserves
a closer look). Surface winds decreased slowly from about 10 m/s at 20Z to
about 5.5 m/s at 00Z. Direction steady from 340. T was about 24C
Profiler seeing NWerlies up to 1500 m or so, rotating to more northerly
above.

Once underway, all systems operated will. Profiler had severe clutter in lowest
500 m and again at 2.5 km and up from mountains to east.

IOP#2 will end at 02Z (6pm) so expect data to stop then.
