The development of global biosphere models has occurred in tandem with the ongoing increase in availability of products that may be used to specify boundary conditions and to test the predictions of these simulations. As representations of the terrestrial biosphere increase in sophistication, these data migrate from use in model initialization to use in validating prognostic model components when these quantities become new ‘moving parts’ as opposed to model inputs. In this joint EOL-CGD seminar, I will discuss the range of satellite products that can, are, and may (in the future) be useful for land surface schemes. I will further illustrate examples of how the representation of plant and ecosystem physiology of the next-generation of the Community Land Model (CLM) is closely informed by these observations, and finally introduce the new ‘biogeochemical and biogeophysical core’ of the CLM (the CLM-Ecosystem Demography model) along with comparisons to relevant EO and re-analysis products.
