Manned and Unmanned Aircraft in Air-Sea Interaction Research

The coupling between the atmosphere and the ocean at the scales of the wind-driven surface, with wavelengths from millimeters to hundreds of meters, is a very important aspect of atmospheric and oceanic dynamics, thermodynamics and gas transfer. The technology available to make airborne measurements of the processes contributing to air-sea interaction, including instrumentation and platforms, has increased significantly in the last decade. The platforms my group has used over the last 15 years include a Long-Eze, C130, Piper Twin Commanche, Twin-Otter, Manta UAV, Partenavi P68 and InSitu/Boeing ScanEagle. In addition to using off-the-shelf instrumentation to build the core of the Modular Aerial Sensing System (MASS, comprised of a scanning lidar, visible and IR imagery along, with a hyperspectral imager and GPS/IMU), for manned flights, we have also developed four instrument packages (one for the Manta and three for the ScanEagles), all to measure the marine atmospheric boundary layer, the ocean surface, and surface signatures of subsurface processes. In this talk I will discuss the scientific questions, the instrumentation and platforms used in the field, and the results we have obtained from this technology.
