The NEXRAD Doppler weather radar (WSR-88D) was fully operational by 1995. For the past twenty years or more, the NEXRAD project has engaged in continuous product improvement, most recently adding polarimetric capability. This seminar reviews some of the projects resulting in major improvements in signal processing. The National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) has played a key role in several of the most significant improvement projects, and this talk will describe some of this work. These projects included improvements to spectrum width estimators, automatic identification of clutter, and range velocity ambiguity mitigation. Current NCAR research focuses on Differential Reflectivity calibration and this complex topic is reviewed, including current NEXRAD program efforts to monitor the calibration state of network radars by use of external targets.
The seminar concludes with a forecast of on-going and future efforts to ensure the WSR-88D maintains its world class leadership role.
Seminar will be webcast at: http://www.fin.
