Data Services

EOL’s platforms and instruments collect large and often unique data sets that must be validated, archived, and made available to the research community.

The goal of EOL data services is to advance science through delivering high-quality project data and metadata in ways that are transparent, secure, and easily accessible -- today and into the future. By adhering to accepted standards in data formats and services, EOL provides infrastructure to facilitate discovery and direct access to data and software from state-of-the-art commercial and locally developed applications. EOL’s data services are committed to the highest standard of data stewardship from collection to validation to archival.

Data Acquisition & Management

By using flexible interfaces and protocols, EOL ensures that an instrument’s data streams are integrated into our state-of-the-art data acquisition systems. EOL develops and maintains data services and communications infrastructure to facilitate global participation in field projects.

Field Support

EOL staff ensure all systems are functioning properly and troubleshoot any issues that might arise prior to the start a field campaign. We set up a field operations center and build a sophisticated field data environment for data acquisition, processing, and display. We link this network to the Internet to maintain contact with the rest of the scientific community during operations. EOL staff in Boulder monitor the mission remotely and collaborate with the field team in real time. All of our services—from the deployment of real-time cyberinfrastructure and mission coordination tools to systems support to infield data management—are designed to help obtain the best possible dataset.

Integrated Data Displays

The field catalog is a web-based tool intended for collecting, organizing, and presenting reports; viewing quick-look data products from operational, research, and model generated sources; and finding and updating status information during the field phases of observational experiments.

The catalog also has links to real-time mission tools, which provide real-time visualization of data from varying temporal and spatial resolutions and allow researchers to interact with one another to guide the mission from anywhere in the world via an Internet-connected device.

EOL Data Policy

This policy is to be made available to all Platform Principal Investigators immediately after Facility support for a Research Project has been granted. An acknowledgment of receipt and statement of understanding of this Policy is required before the field phase of an experiment begins.
