A Laser Motion Air Sensor (LAMS) based upon laser doppler velocimetry is currently in development for use on HIAPER. A prototype, using a single beam, high power 1.5 µm narrow linewidth fiber laser source is being investigated and scheduled for experimental test flights in late 2006.

The system is currently being evaluated in the laboratory. All optical design parameters have been met. The beam quality is within 10 % of modeled output and provides a gaussian beam quality of greater than 95% at the focussing region.

The LAMS prototype was recently flown and evaluated on the HIAPER G-V aircraft (Summer 2007).
