ATD... SCMS CP2 Data Availability

About These Data

NCAR's CP2 radar operated in support of the Small Cumulus Microphysics Study during July and August, 1995.

The Research Data Program (RDP) of ATD maintains a permanent archive of all CP2 data for this project, and may be contacted for data requests.

Tapes and Time Periods Available

The following tape data with the indicated time spans are available. Note that time gaps may occasionally exist within a tape, and the summary information file should be consulted to determine if a specific time period actually exists on tape (click on the tape number to view the summary file; click here for general information about the contents of the summary files). Tape numbers shown are RDP archive numbers, and may be referenced when requesting data. Click on the button (when present) to review radar scan patterns for the time period of a corresponding tape.

NCAR CP2 Operational Radar Images during SCMS

Movie loops of low-level scans have been created for some tapes during certain radar projects. See the tables at the end of this document to access daily movie files.

Daily CP2 Movies for SCMS

Movies are from low-level surveillence sweeps at frame intervals of from 7 to 12 minutes. All sweeps are at .8 degree elevation, despite labels in the movies that seem to indicate scans of .7 and .9 degrees (exceptions are the scans for 17-Jul and 2-Aug [hurricane Erin]). In the movies, certain sectors (to the south and SE of CP2) are blanked-out, a requirement of NASA that CP2 not transmit over space shuttle launch pads or landing strips.

Sizes of the movies are noted in Mbytes -- they are long! -- and the number of frames is listed; a short movie is provided as an example (however, this "short" movie is still 600Kbytes). Various things were tried to reduce the size of the movies: resolutions were changed, frame sizes altered, and tests were run with a much smaller color palette (this last had no appreciable effect). So, ... apologies for the large sizes. Send any suggestions you may have so I can try them, and keep in mind that the data are available on tape.

If you have comments or problems: please contact me. The movies provided here were created on a Sun platform using software obtained over the net; you may experience problems related to filesize, network bandwidth, or hardware incompatibilities. I'd really like to know about the problems, so they can be avoided in future movie creations.

Movies can be provided on tape media (in UNIX tar format, with "gif" images of individual frames) for users who desire their own copy, or in cases where lack of sufficient network bandwidth makes access a torment. Simply contact RDP for ordering data.

X-Band, Reflectivity Only

These X-band movies were created to support the boundary layer studies of Weckwerth and Wilson. CP2/RP6 X-band is not Dopplerized, so velocity was not available. [Special note: CP2 was configured with an auxiliary processor during SCMS, and this auxiliary processor recovered X-band Doppler velocities; data from this processor is preliminary, and has not yet been reduced to a form that is available to the general user community.]
