Project #1999-803 MAP

Mesoscale Alpine Programme

Kuettner, et al.

NSF/NCAR L-188 Electra (N308D)

Documentation Summary

This site has the final documentation for the airborne measurements obtained from the NSF/NCAR Research Aviation Facility (RAF) L-188 Electra aircraft during the Mesoscale Alpine Programme (MAP) which took place from 14 September to 15 November 1999.

Orders for the LRT (1 sps) production data set may be directed to the RAF Data Manager, Ron Ruth. The data files also are available via anonymous ftp transfer; click here. PMS 2-D particle image data are provided in separate files. Software is available at RAF to view these data in a summary format. Access is also possible through individual science accounts with the NCAR computer center. High rate (25 sps) data have not been processed at this time but will be made available on a flight-by-flight basis. Distribution of these data will be made in response to individual requests by the project participants.

Both the raw and production output data from the Electra have been archived to the NCAR/CISL Mass Store System (MSS) which has proven to be extremely reliable. However, we strongly urge data recipients to make their own archival copies to protect against damage or loss.

Please note that the responsibility for processing and distribution of data from the ELDORA, SABL, WARDS and dropsondes belongs to other individuals within NCAR's Earth Observing Laboratory (EOL). (See the "Reports" section below for contact information.)

As you proceed with analysis of your data, you may have questions, encounter problems, or uncover discrepancies or other aspects of the data set that may be of interest to the RAF and other users. We ask that you bring these issues to the attention of the project manager or the RAF Manager:

Allen Schanot, (303)497-1063
Jeffrey L. Stith Ph.D, (303)497-1032, Research Aviation Facility Manager
FAX phone number: (303)497-1092
Mail address:
National Center for Atmospheric Research
ATD/Research Aviation Facility
P. O. Box 3000
Boulder, CO 80307-3000

We also solicit your more general comments on the quality, usefulness and/or new applications of the data.

We are pleased to serve as major providers of information to the MAP program, as it was an exciting project. We look forward to assisting you and the other investigators as the analysis of those data proceed. If I can be of further help, please do not hesitate to call.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey L. Stith, Ph.D.
Manager, Research Aviation Facility
