Project #1999-102 INDOEX

NSF/NCAR EC-130Q Hercules (N130AR)

Documentation Summary

This site has the final documentation for the airborne measurements obtained from the NSF/NCAR Research Aviation Facility (RAF) EC-130Q Hercules aircraft during the INDian Ocean EXperiment (INDOEX) which took place from 16 February to 25 March 1999.

Orders for the LRT (1 sps) production data set may be directed to the RAF Data Manager, Ron Ruth. Please note that the responsibility for processing and distribution of data from the MASP, MCR, SABL and AIMR belongs to other individuals within NCAR's Atmospheric Technology Division (ATD). (See the "Reports" section below for contact information.)

Both the raw and production output data from the EC-130Q have been archived to the NCAR/SCD Mass Store System (MSS) which has proven to be extremely reliable. However, we strongly urge data recipients to make their own archival copy to protect against damage or loss.

As you proceed with analysis of your data, you may have questions, encounter problems, or uncover discrepancies or other aspects of the data set that may be of interest to the RAF and other users. We ask that you bring these issues to the attention of the project manager:

We also solicit your more general comments on the quality, usefulness and/or new applications of the data.

We hope that the support of this project provided by the Research Aviation Facility has been satisfactory. It has been our pleasure to serve you. If we can be of further help, please do not hesitate to call.

Erratum Notice:  On 3 December 2001 Dr. Cynthia Twohy (Oregon State U) reported to RAF a calculation error in one of the FSSP measurements: CONCF_LPI and CONCF_RPC [FSSP-100 Concentration (all cells)], the sum of the individual cell concentrations [CFSSP_LPI and CFSSP_RPC, FSSP-100 Concentration (per cell)]. Upon investigating this discrepancy, it was found that the following per-cell correction term was omitted:

correct_CONCF = CONCF / (1.0 - 6.0 × 10 -4 × CONCF)
Because of this, the CONCF_LPI and CONCF_RPC measurements show values that are from 2% to 8% high (largest percentages at the highest concentrations). The correct total concentration can be obtained by summing the values in the individual cell concentrations. Other measurements also are affected (DBARF_LPI, DBARF_RPC and PLWCF_LPI, PLWCF_RPC) but to a much lesser extent.
