For Research Flight 12 the C-130 flew 7.1 hours in cumulus/stratocumulus clouds over Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. These lake-effect clouds were widespread, and contained mostly ice particles with only occasional liquid water drops. The C-130 was able to get a box, such that measurements from 500 ft to 15 kft could be obtained. Cloud top temperatures were as cold as -37 degC, and liquid water was observed at temperatures nearly that cold. As the day progressed, the convective clouds became more organized with beautiful squal-line like clouds with very distinct gust fronts and with very dense snow-fall behing the squalls. Between the clouds were clear air regions. - Jorgen
