Documentation Summary

This site has the final documentation for the airborne measurements obtained from the NSF/NCAR Research Aviation Facility (RAF) C-130Q Hercules aircraft (Tail Number N130AR) during the Alliance Icing Research Study - II project which took place from 23 October to 6 December 2003.

The Low-Rate (LRT, 1 sample per second) Production data set is available on-line at the URL:
        http://www.eol.ucar.edu/raf/Catalog/taplog.lrt.109.html.
If this access method is unacceptable, data orders may be directed to the RAF Data Manager, Ron Ruth, phone: (303)497-1084. Access is also possible through individual scientist accounts with the NCAR Scientific Computing Division.

Both the raw and production output data have been archived to the NCAR/SCD Mass Store System (MSS) which has proven to be extremely reliable. However, we strongly urge data recipients to make their own archival copies to protect against damage or loss.

Software for viewing the Low-Rate data is available from the RAF. Please consult the RAF Software Product Guide for more information on available RAF data-perusal programs.

As you proceed with analysis of your data, you may have questions, encounter problems, or uncover discrepancies or other aspects of the data set that may be of interest to the RAF and to other users. We ask that you bring these issues to the attention of the Project Manager or the RAF Manager.

We are pleased to serve as major providers of information to the AIRS-II program and look forward to assisting you and the other investigators as the analysis of those data proceeds. If I can be of further help, please do not hesitate to call.

Sincerely,

Jeffrey L. Stith, Ph.D.
Manager, Research Aviation Facility

A small problem was discovered in the AIRS-II flight-level data which has now been corrected (14 October 2004). The heated temperature, TTWH, was processed with incorrect calibration coefficients for flights RF07 and RF10 through RF15. This sensor developed a small offset between flights RF09 and RF10, possibly due to maintenance. Comparisons with ATRR would suggest that the change was about +0.4° C. Corrected data for the above flights are now available from the NCAR Mass Store System, and the files are available from the AIRS-II web page. I apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused. - Jørgen Jensen
