Since RAF changed its output data format from GENPRO to netCDF in 1993, it has used "cdf" as its standard netCDF file extension. For many years the netCDF community has been using the "nc" extension to tag netCDF files.

So, in the interest of compatibility, on 10 June 2002 the RAF changed its naming convention and began using "nc" as its standard netCDF extension. However, all previously-generated files in the RAF archive which have the "cdf" extension will not change at this time. (Since January 2000, RAF has been using the "nc" extension for all archived production netCDF files. The change announced here also will apply to all new internally-generated files.)
