The flight plan was to perform sawtooth (porpoise) calibration
legs between ARM ground facilities and a vertical calibration and
comparison sounding with the ARM Central Facility (CF) balloon sounding.
Departure from OKC was at 1858 UTC, climbing to 4000' MSL and
heading to the Morris Boundary Facility (BF). Our first porpoise leg
(i.e., ascending and descending through clouds) was from the Morris BF to
the CF, encountering cloud bases at 4000' AGL and tops at 8750' AGL. We
then executed an upwind porpoise leg to the SSW and returning to the CF.
Clouds along the leg were scattered Sc.
To coincide with the CF's scheduled atmospheric sounding launch
at 2028 UTC, the aircraft crew made a spiral ascent/descent from 500' AGL
to 19,000' AGL over the CF. Clouds were scattered Sc with Cs above.
To complete the ARM mission, a porpoise leg through the Sc was
made from the CF to the Vici BF. Enroute clouds were broken Sc. The return
to OKC from Vici was at 6000' MSL, in clouds all the way. Landing was
at 2152 UTC, using 3.1 hours of flight time. There are now 13.9 ARM
flight hours remaining. The ETL radiometer appeared to operate flawlessly.
