"What a perfect cloud deck!"
Surface low pressure system has moved eastward into Alabama with
associated low-level wrap-around moisture extending westward across Kansas
and Oklahoma. While stratocumulus (Sc) extended across eastern Oklahoma,
the P-3 flightplan was to perform an ARM 'cloudy' pattern at and
downwind from the Morris profiler and boundary facility.
Departure from OKC was at 1700 UTC, encountering cloud bases
at 2000 ft AGL and cloud tops at approximately 5000 ft AGL. Sixty
nautical mile aircraft tracks were set up and orientated NNE/SSW from near
Morris towards the southwest. Outbound and inbound legs were executed in
cloud, near cloud base, and above cloud tops. Two complete sets were
completed beginning at 1733 UTC and ending at 2100 UTC. SC remained quite
constant throughout the period with bases at 2000 ft AGL and tops at 6500 ft
AGL.
The P-3 arrived back at OKC at 2127 UTC consuming 4.7 hours of
flight time.
