May 25 (Northfield tornadic supercell; several other mesocyclones)
Synopsis:
Dryline initiated several supercells over west Texas. Of particular
interest in
VORTEX: a supercell near Silverton, a tornadic supercell east of Turkey,
and several other
mesocyclones between Turkey and Quanah, TX.
Intercept:
The armada viewed a supercell near Silverton, TX, but the lack of roads
prevented an
intercept. The armada then intercepted a supercell near Turkey,
penetrating from the back of the
storm, through the hook-echo region, into the mesocyclone region. Data
were collected as this
storm produced a tornado. Lack of suitable roads prevented us from
collecting the types of data
we wanted. The armada then observed and intercepted several more
non-tornadic mesocyclones
between Turkey and Quanah.
