VOCALS Participants

Dr. Rob Wood (PI)

Robert Wood is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences at the University of Washington. His research interests focus on the understanding of processes occurring in clouds, using observations from a broad range of sensors (satellite and ground-based remote sensing, aircraft, surface instrumentation) and numerical models. He has a particular fascination with boundary layer clouds, to which a considerable fraction of his research efforts are dedicated. These clouds are extensive and reflect a large amount of solar radiation, but their albedo is strongly sensitive to the properties of the aerosols introduced into them, and to relatively small changes in the precipitation they generate. Robert Wood's role in VOCALS will center around coordinating flights, and collecting and analyzing data from the NSF C-130 aircraft.

Dr. Christopher Bretherton (Co-PI)

Chris Bretherton is a professor in the Departments of Atmospheric Science and Applied Mathematics at the University of Washington. Chris teaches diverse classes on weather, atmospheric turbulence and cumulus convection, geophysical fluid dynamics, numerical methods, and classical analysis of ODEs and PDEs. Chris also directs the University of Washington Program on Climate Change, which organizes graduate courses, seminars, a summer institute, and research on climate science and its relevance to our society and future. His main research interests are atmospheric convection, boundary layer cloudiness and numberical modeling.

Dr. Barry Huebert (Co-PI)

Barry Huebert is a Professor in the Department of Oceanography at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. His main research interests are in air sea exchange of trace gases and especially DMS; marine aerosol production, growth and cloud interactions; climatic impact of organic and elemental carbon aerosols; radiative properties of biomass burning smoke particles and airborne aerosol sampling technologies.
