Internet Use "Best Practices" while on Addu Atoll.

When you are on the Addu Atoll, you will find you have two feasible internet options:

a)    S-Pol wireless at the S-Pol radar site.
b)    use of a 3G USB modem on your laptop from anywhere on the atoll

1)    The S-Pol site has the highest bandwidth readily available for internet use while you are in the Maldives and it may be tempting to use the
internet in the same way that you do at home, including video Skype, ITunes, and YouTube, etc. However, the primary function of the S-Pol
internet is for data transfer, including back to the data archives in Boulder. We ask that you respect this, and keep personal use to a
minimum - primarily emails with at best small file attachments, perhaps audio Skype if you find yourself alone in the trailers (unlikely), if you are a
newshound low-volume newspaper visits.

Please refrain from bandwidth-intensive activities such as viewing videos online or downloading large
files with the S-Pol network as this may jeopardize operations.

2)    It may help to download movies, music and other personal/entertainment items before your departure. The Maldives is a conservative
Muslim country.  A word to the wise is to be careful what you bring with you.  Putting items on your computer hard drive is one thing but they may
confiscate any DVDs, CDs etc, they view to be objectionable.  When you arrive in Malé Airport, your luggage will be scanned/X-Rayed at the airport.
We are not aware of any instance from DYNAMO travelers where a computer hard drive was examined.

If you fly through the Middle East and have a stop over in a Muslim country (UAE, Qatar etc.) there is a higher possibility that Customs agents may take a greater interest in
any and all media, including your computer hard drive.

Be Smart, Be Respectful.

3)    Personal internet use is best done using the 3G network on the island.
