PRECIPITATION FROM ERA-40 RE-ANALYSIS (Serreze, Barrett)
Summary
This data set provides estimates of daily total precipitation from
the European Center for Medium Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) ERA-40
Reanalysis (ECMWF 2002). Data cover the period 1 January 1979 to 31
August 2002. Data were obtained from the National Center for
Atmospheric Research (NCAR) Data Support Section dataset ds117.0
(). Precipitation is archived
as 6 hour accumulations of convective and large scale (Stratiform)
precipitation. Daily total precipitation was computed by summing 6
hour accumulations of convective and large-scale components. Fields
of total precipitation were regridded from the native N80 (roughly 1
degree resolution) reduced gaussian grid to the EASE 25km grid using a
bilinear interpolation scheme. This scheme is described in ECMWF
[2003].
The data is presented in 24 sub-datasets of different spatial and temporal
aggregations (see aggregation description below).

Data Aggregation
There are two distinct methods to produce data aggregation
along the "time" axis of the cube. These are -
-
Mean. Monthly or yearly values for each grid cell in the
dataset has been produced as simple mean (average)
over the indicated time period. An example is temperature datasets.
-
Sum. Monthly or yearly values for each grid cell in the
dataset has been produced as arithmetic total over
the indicated time period. An example is precipitation datasets.
-
Vector. Monthly or yearly values for each grid cell in
the dataset has been produced as product vector
(vector average) over the indicated time period. An example is wind direction
datasets.
-
Class. Monthly or yearly values for each grid cell in the
dataset has been produced as prevailing (most frequent)
qualitative class over the indicated time period. An example is
freeze-thaw datasets.
Each aggregated data file in a dataset has a notation of a
method (mean or sum) used to produce the file. The notation included in the
first (top) line of the file. Please, pay attention to that.
Aggregation along the "spatial scale" axis of the cube is
done using simple mean (average) over all grid cells of each basin (river, sea
basin, or continent) from an appropriate grid cell file.
