There is a 15% tax on top, but this tax is waived for persons staying over 30 days (Ohio rule). - Jorgen From jbj at ucar.edu Wed Oct 15 16:11:28 2003 From: jbj at ucar.edu (Jorgen Jensen) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] C-130 fuel inspections completed Message-ID: <3F8DC610.6060107@ucar.edu> Hi All, The C-130 fuel tank inspections were completed earlier today, and once again we have power available on the aircraft. I realize that some of you have been postponing making travel arrangements, but we can now proceed with the installation of the final items. Due to the extensive checking needed, we will not commence test flights until Wednesday 22 Oct at the earliest. There is a high demand for the sheet-metal staff, and it may be that the first flight will have to be postponed to later than Wednesday 22 Oct. Please let me know of your travel and installation plans - thanks, Jorgen From newbery at atd.ucar.edu Mon Oct 20 15:43:26 2003 From: newbery at atd.ucar.edu (Santiago Newbery) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] Network access at JeffCo for non-UCAR visitors In-Reply-To: <3F905319.40709@ucar.edu> References: <3F905319.40709@ucar.edu> Message-ID: <3F9456FE.1060005@atd.ucar.edu> Greetings, If you are visiting the NCAR Jeffco Aviation Facility in connection with the AIRS Project you should be aware of a recent change in our Network Security Policy. Message-ID: <3F9476A5.4050803@ucar.edu> Hi All, The upload for AIRS-2 is progressing well, in particular given the aircraft maintenance problems that are now completed. All non-NCAR staff who plan to fly on the C-130 during AIRS-2 (and who are currently in Boulder) are asked to attend the safety briefing planned for the the conference room at RAF on Wednesday 22 October at 2 PM. NCAR staff who plan to fly on the C-130 during AIRS-2 are also asked to participate, if they have not already seen the new power-point presentation of safety procedures. The C-130 must be weighed before the first flight, and this will take about 3 hours. During this there will be no access to the C-130 for installation, etc. The schedule for this week is as follows: Wednesday 22 October, 1 - 4 PM weighing of C-130. Wednesday 22 October, 1:30 PM project planning meeting in RAF conference room. Please state your requirements to test flights, etc. Wednesday 22 October, 2 PM safety briefing in RAF conference room. Thursday 23 October, 9 AM roll-out of C-130 to tarmac. Thursday 23 October, 11 AM test flight, short. - Jorgen From jbj at ucar.edu Wed Oct 22 17:03:47 2003 From: jbj at ucar.edu (Jorgen Jensen) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] Test flight Thursday 23 October Message-ID: <3F970CD3.3090803@ucar.edu> Hi All, At todays planning meeting it was decided to have a short test flight, essentially to test functionality, rather than doing extended sampling. The schedule is: Thursday 23 Oct. 7:30 AM: C-130 moved outside 8:00 AM: Power on 9:00 AM flight planning 10:15 AM: All staff onboard 11:00 AM: Take-off Estimated duration 1 hour, longer if clouds are present in the vicinity of JeffCo Final inspection and sign-off of racks and other equipment will be done prior to tomorrows flight. - Jorgen From jbj at ucar.edu Fri Oct 24 07:51:01 2003 From: jbj at ucar.edu (Jorgen Jensen) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] yesterday's test flight Message-ID: <3F992E45.1020404@ucar.edu> Hi All, Yesterdays test flight was a 1:15 minute flight through clear air conditions only. A high-pressure situation meant that only thin cirrus existed, and these were too high to reach. Data from the flight is available internally on /jnet/data as 109tf01b.ads, 109tf01b.2d, etc. The data will be made available via the net to external investigators as soon as the AIRS-2 web site becomes externally accesible, which will be requested to ATD's system administrators today by Ron Ruth. A second test flight is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday 28 October at 1 PM. - Jorgen From jbj at ucar.edu Mon Oct 27 17:41:38 2003 From: jbj at ucar.edu (Jorgen Jensen) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] Scheduling of Tuesday 28 October flight Message-ID: <3F9DBB42.90904@ucar.edu> Hi All, Due to the late arrival of one AIRS-2 participant tomorrow, we will need to schedule the test flight one hour later than originally anticipated. Thus departure is scheduled for Tuesday 28 October, at 2 PM. We expect a test-flight of about 2 hours duration. There will be a safety briefing prior to the flight for those participants who have not already undergone last weeks briefing. Tomorrow's safety briefing is scheduled for 12:30. - Jorgen From jbj at ucar.edu Tue Oct 28 17:37:18 2003 From: jbj at ucar.edu (Jorgen Jensen) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] Overview of test flight 2 - pland for test flight 3 Message-ID: <3F9F0BBE.7040104@ucar.edu> Hi All, The C-130 just completed the second test flight, this time to an area north of Cheyenne, WY, in strong northwesterly airflow. The aircraft climbed through a shallow Cu/Sr-Cu layer at about 13000 ft, and leveled out at 18000 ft. At this level the C-130 was between the lover cloud deck, and a higher-level cirrus deck. A set of staged speed maneuvers were made on a reverse heading track, followed by a roller-coaster and a set of yaw maneuvers. All of these were designed to test the newly installed pitot-static system This part also served as a means of extended sampling of upper level aerosol particles, and as a set of observations for making corrections to the new DRI hot-wire T-probes. SABL was operated looking upwards at the upper level cirrus deck for most of the time. One interesting observation was very low particle concentrations for most of these flight legs. CN concentrations as low as 2 per cc were observed from the C-130 CN counter, from the CVI and from the CSU ice nuclei system. When subsequently flying in very thin wave clouds off the main track, particle concentrations about 40 times higher were observed. Two wave cloud flight legs were conducted at 19000 ft and 19500 ft, at temperatures of about -12 C. CPI images showed only spherical particles, indicating a water cloud. After this the C-1`30 descended to the lower Cu/Sr-Cu deck, and - surprisingly - the same very clean air was found below the wave clouds. It is not clear if there was new particle production in the wave clouds, or if some other explanation must be sought. Three flight legs were done in the lower Cu/Sr-Cu deck. The first was done at 15000 ft near cloud top, and this was followed by two legs at 14000 ft. The purpose of the lower two flight decks was to examine if the CSU ice nuclei system gave different results using the normal inlet or the CVI inlet. Finally two reverse heading legs were done below cloud base in the boundary-layer air, followed by a transit back to JeffCo in very turbulent conditions. There were a number of instrumentation issues to be sorted out before the next test flight. Accordingly the next test flight is scheduled for Thursday 30 October at 1 PM. The aircraft should be ready to be rolled out at 11 AM, and also at 11 AM there will be a flight planning meeting in the JeffCo conference room. We expect a test flight of about 3 hours duration. We are still working on gaining approval for making the AIRS-2 web site public, and access to the preliminary AIRS-2 data for AIRS-2 investigators at their home institutions will have to wait until this approval is received. We apologize for the delays in this process. - Jorgen From ruth at atd.ucar.edu Thu Oct 30 09:31:16 2003 From: ruth at atd.ucar.edu (Ron Ruth) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] AIRS-II Web Site Available Message-ID: <3FA13CD4.3040004@atd.ucar.edu> To all, The AIRS-II web site is now up and available to all: http://raf.atd.ucar.edu/AIRS2/ You may encounter a permission problem when accessing some of the pages, and we are working to correct it.
