We expect an 8-hour mission with joint flying with the Canadian Convair. Instruments are working very well, and the forcast calls for stratiform cloud on the back-side of a warm front. This stratiform cloud may be supercooled, so it should be a good case for supercooled drizzle. - Jorgen ------------------------------------------------- This mail sent through IMP: http://horde.org/imp/ From ruth at atd.ucar.edu Thu Nov 13 17:10:28 2003 From: ruth at atd.ucar.edu (Ron Ruth) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] RF06 Message-ID: <3FB41D74.8080000@atd.ucar.edu> Research Flight 6 planned for 14 November 2003: 4:00 a.m. EST: Weather Briefing at hotel 6:30 a.m. EST: Scheduled takeoff time Ron -- Ron Ruth RAF Data Manager NCAR/ATD/RDP&RAF Voice: (303)497-1084 Fax: (303)497-1092 From jbj at atd.ucar.edu Fri Nov 14 08:02:07 2003 From: jbj at atd.ucar.edu (jbj@atd.ucar.edu) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] AIRS-2 RF06 over Montreal this morning Message-ID: <1068822127.3fb4ee6f0ce2f@www.atd.ucar.edu> Hi all, After an early 4 AM start, it was decided to send the C-130 to Mirabel on a stratocumulus flight in a very cold northwesterly airflow. The forecasts suggested a glaciated layer cloud, so this will provide a baseline for other studies of mixed phase and wholly warm clouds. The C-130 left at 6:45 due to delays caused by refueling services and due to problems with SABL's computers. The aircraft is expected to spend about 3 hours over Mirabel, where the ground-based sensing systems are also operational. The aircraft is expected back to Cleveland by 1:30 PM. - Jorgen ------------------------------------------------- This mail sent through IMP: http://horde.org/imp/ From jbj at atd.ucar.edu Sun Nov 16 13:29:13 2003 From: jbj at atd.ucar.edu (jbj@atd.ucar.edu) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] C-130 plans for Monday 17 November 2003 Message-ID: <1069014553.3fb7de19dba52@www.atd.ucar.edu> Hi All, There is some possibility of supercooled stratocumulus over Mirabel by 15Z tomorrow, Monday 17 November. Todays flight, RF07, was done between Syracuse and Watertown, immediately east of Lake Ontario. There were several layer clouds encountered from near the surface to 7000 ft. The clouds contained no ice (at least we didn't observe any), but vigorous drizzle was observed in many parts. Flight legs fro aerosol sampling was done in between and above the cloud legs, but the situation was somewhat complicated as the layers appeared affected by wave-like motion. Data will be transfered to JeffCo on Tuesday morning. The plan for Tuesday calls for a flight over Mirabel, provided the clouds are sufficiently deep that the aircraft can make an extended horizontal traverse in cloud, at altitudes above the minimum of 3000 ft. If cloud top is lower, then we will not go ahead with the flight. The decision to go or not to go will be based on a forecast update at 3:30 AM Tuesday. If conditions are suitable, then the aircraft will be rolled out and 4 AM, and the scheduled take-off will be 6 AM. The 3:30 AM weather briefing will take place in the upstairs room of the hotel. - Jorgen ------------------------------------------------- This mail sent through IMP: http://horde.org/imp/ From jbj at atd.ucar.edu Tue Nov 18 07:00:58 2003 From: jbj at atd.ucar.edu (jbj@atd.ucar.edu) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] C-130 over Mirabel Message-ID: <1069164058.3fba261a92c74@www.atd.ucar.edu> Hi All, The C-130 took off this morning at 6 AM local time following the 3:30 AM weather update. There is a stratocumulus deck over Mirabel, but the cloud tops are at +0.5 degC, so there is no icing hazard. In the lowest few hundreds of meters over the surface there is much colder air, so drizzle - if any - may supercool at the lower level. The cloud top is variable, and only allows for the C-130 to make transects close to cloud top, in order to be higher than the minimum flight altitude for the region. - Jorgen ------------------------------------------------- This mail sent through IMP: http://horde.org/imp/ From jbj at atd.ucar.edu Tue Nov 18 16:03:40 2003 From: jbj at atd.ucar.edu (jbj@atd.ucar.edu) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] AIRS-2 RF08 flight over Montreal Message-ID: <1069196620.3fbaa54c7f7a0@www.atd.ucar.edu> Hi All, We are nearing the half-way mark for AIRS-2, both in terms of dates in the field and in terms of flight hours. Today the C-130 completed a mission to Mirabel, where a thin stratocumulus deck was found, very much as per the forecast. Cloud top was at about +0.5 degrees, and negative temperatures were only found very close to the surface. The aircraft made a number of horizontal traverses and two spiral descents, leading to missed approaches to allow for flying at very low level. Drizzle was not ver pronounced, and the aerosol composition showed large spatial variability from very dirty air to very clean air. The plan for Wednesday 19 November is: 8:30 AM Weather briefing in the airport. Go/no-go decision for a flight into deep frontal clouds with potential icing at high altitudes. 9:00 AM Aircraft out and power on, provided the decision is made to go. 11:00 AM Possible takeoff. The PCASP is now functional again, after the problems early in RF09. Likewise, the left pod DSM is also functional, after some chip replacements. It appears that the left pod DSM malfunctioned during flight in charged ice particles during RF08. The error occured simultaneously with the aircraft radio recording a lot of static, which is an indication of static charge buildup on the aircraft. It is likely that this lead to a strong static discharge from the aircraft. Today an 'exploded' microchip was found in one of the DSM serial cards, and this may have been the cause of the DSM problems. The DSM is now functional and the aircraft is ready to fly. The weather forecast calls for clear skies over the target area for tomorrow, and we have therefore declared Friday 21 Nov to be a no-fly-day. The schedule is: Friday 21 Nov: 8:30 AM Briefing in the airport 9:00 AM Power on the aircraft Work to be done includes SABL checks and chat work outside the hangar. ? PM Power off the aircraft Saturday 22 Nov: Possible hard down day. Decision to stand down or not will be made during the Friday 8:30 AM briefing. Sunday 23 Nov: Possible flight day. Decision TBA. There has been a lot of flying during the first part of AIRS-2, and we are now past the mid-point. The summary of flight time is: Test Ferry Research Allocation 6 8 81 Flown 3.8 3.8 53.2 Remaining 2.2 4.2 27.8 Sofar we have had 14 potential flying days, and as of tomorrow we have 11 remaining potential flying days. Thus on the first 56% of the flying days, we have flown 65% of the allocated research flight hours. The remaining 27.8 flight hours are sufficient for 4 long flights to Mirabel, or for a combination of Mirabel flights and shorter aerosol flights upwind of Mirabel. - Jorgen ------------------------------------------------- This mail sent through IMP: http://horde.org/imp/ From jbj at atd.ucar.edu Fri Nov 21 08:55:16 2003 From: jbj at atd.ucar.edu (jbj@atd.ucar.edu) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] C-130 plans for 21-23 Nov.
