From jbj at atd.ucar.edu Tue Dec 2 07:54:05 2003 From: jbj at atd.ucar.edu (jbj@atd.ucar.edu) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] Notes for RF12 and plans for Tuesday 2 December Message-ID: <1070376845.3fcca78dac191@www.atd.ucar.edu> Hi All, Yesterday the C-130 flew 7.1 hours in cumulus/stratocumulus clouds over Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. These lake effect clouds were widespread, and contained mostly ice particles with only occasional liquid water drops. The C-130 was able to get a box, such that measurements from 500 ft to 15 kft could be obtained. Cloud top temperatures were as cold as -37 degC, and liquid water was observed at temperatures nearly that cold. As the day progressed, the convective clouds became more organized with beautiful squal-line like clouds with very distinct gust fronts and with very dense snow-fall behing the squalls. Between the clouds were clear air regions. This morning the maintenance staff discovered a problem with a fire-detection system for engine #2, and we are currently in the process of obtaining a spare part. Until that has been received and installed, the C-130 will be down. There is a possibility that the aircraft will be ready for flying later today, depending on shipping and the progress of the repair. There should be more lake effect clouds present for the remainder of the day, whereas Mirabel does not appear to have suitable clouds for today. - Jorgen ------------------------------------------------- This mail sent through IMP: http://horde.org/imp/ From jbj at atd.ucar.edu Wed Dec 3 08:56:59 2003 From: jbj at atd.ucar.edu (jbj@atd.ucar.edu) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] C-130 operations, Wednesday 3 Dec Message-ID: <1070467019.3fce07cba721d@www.atd.ucar.edu> Hi All, The C-130 fire detection system is now repaired, and the aircraft is ready to take off for a 5-hour flight today (Wed 3 Dec) to Georgian Bay, NE of Lake Huron. The plan for Wed is: 11:30 AM Take-off 4:30 PM Touch-down This will allow for an early flight Thursday morning for Mirabel, if forecast cloud conditions develop an expected. - Jorgen ------------------------------------------------- This mail sent through IMP: http://horde.org/imp/ From jbj at atd.ucar.edu Wed Dec 3 16:32:20 2003 From: jbj at atd.ucar.edu (jbj@atd.ucar.edu) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] C-130 plans for Thrusday 4 Dec. Message-ID: <1070494340.3fce72843e1af@www.atd.ucar.edu> Hi All, The C-130 completed a very interesting flight today over Georgian Bay. There was 2 main layer of cloud, both very cold (-18 and -23 deg, I think), with large amounts of water. The lower level had consistently 0.2-0.3 g/m3, and icing was encountered. Very few large drizzle drops, but the CPI saw many smaller drops. The lower deck was probably lake affected, whereas the upper one was "prarie air", which rose up over the lower deck in a meso-scale field. The upper deck was more thin and wispy, but very interesting as we may have caught the "birth of an icing incident", as John hallett expressed it. There is some hope that this system will be over Mirabel tomorrow morning, so the plan is for: Thursday 4 Dec: 6:30 AM - Meet in Airport 7:00 AM - Weather briefing 7:15 AM - Aircraft out, power on 8:30 AM - Expected take-off 10:30 AM - Over Mirabel (provided weather is OK) - Jorgen ------------------------------------------------- This mail sent through IMP: http://horde.org/imp/ From jbj at atd.ucar.edu Fri Dec 5 08:22:48 2003 From: jbj at atd.ucar.edu (jbj@atd.ucar.edu) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] C-130 wrap-up Message-ID: <1070637768.3fd0a2c847ec7@www.atd.ucar.edu> Hi All, The network connection to the NASA computer / analysis room is down, and no data has been transfered to JeffCo for RF14. Today we plan a 2-hour FSSP and other sensors instrument study from 12:30 to 2:30. After that we pack up, and the plan is to return to JeffCo late Saturday. - Jorgen ------------------------------------------------- This mail sent through IMP: http://horde.org/imp/ From ruth at atd.ucar.edu Thu Dec 11 14:53:05 2003 From: ruth at atd.ucar.edu (Ron Ruth) Date: Sat Jul 14 10:03:30 2007 Subject: [Airs-2] Preliminary data no longer available Message-ID: <3FD8E741.8020003@atd.ucar.edu> To all, Now that the field phase of the AIRS-II project has ended, RAF is removing preliminary data access from its web pages. Following final calibration and quality analysis, the production netCDF data will be released and made available, and the project's Documentation Summary web site will be posted.
