6th International Symposium on Tropospheric Profiling
General
Foreword
The 7th International Symposium on Tropospheric Profiling: Needs and Technologies (ISTP) will be held in Boulder, Colorado from June 11th-17th, 2006. It is hosted by the National Center for Atmospheric Researchand the National Ocianic and Atmospheric Administration at the University of Colorado. The symposium is the seventh in a series that started in Boulder, Colorado, in 1988. Originating from a German-American collaboration with main focus on wind profiling in the lower troposphere, the symposium meanwhile attracts an international group of scientists, engineers, and program managers with broad experience in atmospheric measurement and modeling. Profiling of atmospheric state parameters and constituents, the understanding of tropospheric processes, and the use of experimental data in atmospheric models are now the major topics of the conference.

History of the symposium
1st ISTP Boulder, Colorado 31 May - 3 June 1988
2nd ISTP Boulder, Colorado 10-13 September 1991
3rd ISTP Hamburg, Germany 30 August - 2 September 1994
4th ISTP Snowmass, Colorado 21-25 September 1998
5th ISTP Adelaide, Australia 4-8 December 2000
6th ISTP Leipzig, Germany 14-20 September 2003

General Objective and Scope

Improved understanding and forecasting of the state of the atmosphere depends critically on advances in modeling and observation techniques.

At this symposium the needs of the user community as well as benefits to be provided from improved tropospheric profiling will be presented. Recent progress in technology also considering the combination of different sensors and retrieval algorithms will be assessed. Contributions that discuss applications such as sensor and model validation, data assimilation, process studies, and climate monitoring are especially welcome.

Conference Topics
As in the past Symposia our topics will broadly include tropospheric profiling measurement, instruments, measurement needs. General topics include:
Profiling of wind, water vapor, temperature, and trace gases
Validation of measurements and models with in-situ and
remote sensors
Aerosols, clouds, and radiation
Assimilation of tropospheric profiling data
Convection and turbulence
Precipitation
Networks and integrated systems
New instruments and algorithms
  • Combinations of diverse profiling measurements and the synergies they produce.
