159: Status, Site , Wed 29-May-2002 12:29:05 CDT, Daily Status, May 29 w'h2o' s7-9 low; now know of GOES transmission interference 161: Site_visit, Site 7, Wed 29-May-2002 23:19:08 CDT, Site 7 visit We did several things at site 7. Our primary reason for the visit was to see if the glitch in the analog channels seen in the high-rate data at s8 also occurred at non-supersites. Using "sbusdebug" to watch Tsfc voltages, it was obvious that the glitch does occur here.... We left the station with GOES back running and the antenna near the sonic. 162: Site_visit, Site 8, Wed 29-May-2002 23:28:05 CDT, Site 8 visit - We disconnected power to the GOES transmitter and left it off. (After verifying that the A/D problem still was present, though only about 70 counts here.) 163: Status, Site , Wed 29-May-2002 23:44:02 CDT, thoughts about GOES problem Steve: Since the problem goes away with the dummy RF load, it may be possible to eliminate the problem by relocating the antenna (using a longer RF cable which Steve doesn't think will be a problem) and/or by changing back to the yagi antennae (we should have a complete set of spares) 164: Status, Site , Thu 30-May-2002 11:33:48 CDT, Daily Status Visit to s7 - test of GOES interference Visit to s8 - test of GOES interference; GOES turned off; prop service; soil profile noise tests; etc. 165: Site_visit, Site 5, Thu 30-May-2002 18:59:16 CDT, Site 5 visit Arrived at site 5 at ~ 13:30 and began a series of test on the GOES interference...The GOES tests result: - noise even when Yagi deployed 10 m away - noise even with a dummy load - reduction of noise on Tsfc from 250 counts to 15 counts when GOES transmitter box outside the Eve box As a result we rigged the cables out through a hole in the bottom of the box and placed the GOES box atop a battery box with a tupper ware cover. 166: Site_visit, Site 4, Thu 30-May-2002 19:16:39 CDT, Site 4 visit Following the procedure adapted at site 5 we removed the GOES DCP transmitter and repositioned it outside and below the EVE box, with a tupperware cover. Then we discovered that there still was GOES interference of 180 counts on Tsfc. (Unfortunately we had not tested for noise before making the change) 167: GOES, Site , Fri 31-May-2002 07:47:18 CDT, looking at GOES interference I just looked at the variation of the jumps from the high-rate data at s1&8 on 5/23. (The code is in ../S/jumpsort.q) The attached plot shows that the variations in time can be large, and that the effect on each site and each channel can be different. This is going to be a problem... 168: Site_visit, Site 6, Fri 31-May-2002 11:33:35 CDT, GOES off at s6 Since the King-Air is flying today 12:30-16:00 over the Central legs, we decided to turn off all GOES transmitters from 4-6. (s5's we apparently forgot to turn on at the end of yesterday, so it is already off.) Our sequence was: - 10:46 turned off GOES (SE120) - a few minutes later decided to turn back on and log "jump" - captured end of Tsfc jump -- not very apparent -- as "s6" (will rename later) - captured KH2O jump (not obvious, but large fluctuations) and next Tsfc jump (160 counts = 16mV) as "s6.2" 169: GOES, Site 5, Fri 31-May-2002 13:49:14 CDT, GOES was off at Site 5 We did a QUICK stop (1203-1205) at s5 and verified that I had left the GOES transmitter (SE110) off. We left it off and did nothing else at this site. 170: Site_visit, Site 4, Fri 31-May-2002 13:50:36 CDT, Site 4 visit During this time, we captured a GOES transmission with Tsfc, I think, then turned the station off from about 1222-1229 while I put braid (ground strap) around the krypton signal cable in the EVE box. I then captured the KH2O during a transmission -- a jump was not apparent, but the krypton signal was highly variable. Turned GOES off at 1238. 171: Status, Site , Fri 31-May-2002 14:43:29 CDT, Daily Status Visit to s5 - fixed? GOES interference; replaced KH2O Visit to s4 - didn't fix GOES interference; cleaned KH2O 172: Status, Site , Fri 31-May-2002 22:42:56 CDT, Daily Status Visits on Friday (a full day!): - s6: clean krypton, download data, check GOES interference, turn off GOES - s5: verified that GOES transmitter was switched off - s4: download data, check GOES interference, fixed krypton interference, turn off GOES - s7: download data, check GOES interference, fixed GOES interference!! - s8: download data (both), check GOES interference, fixed GOES interference, fixed bad radiometer fan, replaced prop assembly 173: Site_visit, Site 1, Sat 01-Jun-2002 21:08:39 CDT, Site 1 visit Steve shielded the EVE power and serializer cables.
