16: RAD, Site all, Sun 09-Jun-1996 14:58:25 GMT, Everest IRT footprint
The Everest infrared surface temperature sensors are located on the
crossarm at the top of the PAM mast. The Everest is on the end of
the crossarm that points to the northwest. It is pointed down at a
roughly 45 degree angle and looking to the northwest.

I originally intended to point the IRT to the north as suggested by
Wilf Brutsaert. However since the crop rows are oriented N/S or E/W,
it appeared preferable to look at the rows from an angle of 45 degrees
in order to not be biased by either the crop (looking normal to the
rows) or by the ground (looking parallel to the rows).

The field of view is 15 degrees. Thus the footprint dimensions along
a line to the northwest of the station are from

	(10m)*tan(45-7.5) = 7.7m
to
	(10m)*tan(45+7.5) = 13m

The footprint dimension in the NE/SW direction is

	r*dtheta = h*tan(45)*(pi/180 deg)*(15 deg) = 2.6m

6/20/96

The station is nominally located 1/4 mile east of the center of Section
2, T18N, R7E; 1/2 mile south of road 1200N and 1/4 mile west of road
500E. The station is located on the north edge of a cornfield that
extends roughly 1/4 mile to the east, south, and west. The field to
the north of the station is also corn, but is broken up by N/S strips
of grass extending south about 1/4 mile from the vicinity of the
Bondville FAO driveway.

The corn to the south of the station is planted in E/W rows with a
spacing of 30 inches and is currently (6/20/96) about 60 cm high. The
corn in the immediate vicinity of and north of the station is also in
E/W rows, but is currently only 40 cm high.

6/22/96: Corn to south of station is 30" (76 cm) high. To the north
of the station it is 18" (45 cm) high.

6/25/96: I measured the corn height on 6/25/96 to the Southwest of station 1.
Max height: about 42"
Avg height: about 35-36"
Min height: about 31-32"

The station is located in the nominal center of the NW 1/4 of Section
26, T18N, R7E; 1/4 mile south of road 800N and 1/4 mile east of road
400E. This 1/4 section is planted in corn.

The corn is planted in rows with a spacing of 30 inches. To the SW,
SE, and NW of the station, the rows are oriented E/W, but to the NE of
the station the rows are oriented N/S. However, all the rows in the
immediate vicinity of the station are oriented N/S.

The corn is nominally about 0.75 m high, but some is as high as 0.9 m.
There is a good stand of corn under the radiation stand and in the
vicinity of the soil sensors, but the Everest is looking at a low wet
area that has a weak stand of scattered corn about 0.5 m tall.

Site 3

6/16/96

The station is located in the nominal center of the SW 1/4 of Section
26, T18N, R7E; 1/4 mile north of road 700N and 1/4 mile east of road
400E. This 1/4 section should eventually be planted in soybeans.

Field to north of station (1/4 mile to N, to E, and to W) is planted in
soybeans, currently 2-5 cm high. The beans are planted in rows
oriented predominantly E/W (except for N/S end-rows at the east(?) and
west ends of the field); the rows appear to have a spacing of 7.5 in.

The field to the south of the station (1/4 mile to S, to E, and to W)
is currently unplanted. It has standing corn stubble from last year's
crop.

The station is located on the southern edge of the planted section.

6/22/96: The field to the south of the station was recently planted.
The beans to the north of the station are 4" (10 cm) high.

6/24/96: The beans to the south are beginning to emerge from the
ground.

7/2/96: The beans are about 0.1m along the fetch angle.

54: RAIN, Site all, Mon 17-Jun-1996 19:51:38 GMT, ETI UnderReporting
Heavy Rain last night in the area at about 20-23Z JD168 and again later in
the night through ~1Z JD169, however, stations 1&2 grossly under-reported
the values, showing about .5 and 1.5mm respectively. Station 3 reported
22mm during the same time.

Today, I checked the gauge at Station 3.
First Test, "44-tip" test set:	15 tips
Second Test,"44-tip" test set: 20 tips
Reset power to logger, then
Third Test, "44-tip" test set: 15 tips

Called ETI.
Jerry Price thinks we're under-reporting in the logger.
Apparently Jeff Cole has seen this in the CR10 and fixed it also.

77: RAD, Site all, Fri 21-Jun-1996 21:21:39 GMT, net radiation comparison
The net radiation at site 2 is higher than the other stations during
the day and site 3 is higher (negative, but closer to zero) than the
others during the night. Perhaps this reflects differences in the
surface and vegetation.

Dirt
Temperatures: the GOOD DAy 25 Jun radiation day shows
a different T ranking than cloudier days
We should check the fall of shadows at
                           the dirt sites
             Moisture: P3 > P2 > P1.consistantly. What is the difference
                         in the sites?
There should not be a diurnal effect

The soyabean shows more bare soil and has a

246: SONIC, Site all, Fri 12-Jul-1996 22:57:21 GMT, Sonic status
Sonic at station 1 continues to behave. At station 2 we are
getting the usual spikes on the "u" vector. Station 3 now has some
spikes on "w". This is similar to what we were seeing at station 2
before we changed boxes. This problem may exist in both boxes just
on different vectors.

270: LOG, Site all, Mon 15-Jul-1996 19:56:11 GMT, roughness lengths
Here are some very crude estimates of roughness lengths. I have made an
eyeball average of the u*/spd daily plot for the last 10 days and get
u*/U = 0.07 (beans) and 0.11 (corn) for daytime values. Since these
values are pretty steady, I assume they represent neutral conditions also,
so we can say: u*/U = k/ ln(z/zo). Letting z=10m (beans) and 8.4m (corn),
I get zo = 3cm (beans) and 22cm (corn), which seems a bit large.

271: SOIL, Site all, Mon 15-Jul-1996 20:39:02 GMT, Soil samples
Went around and took soil samples today since we
got some rain yesterday. Refer to logbook entry #35
for numbers.

273: SONIC, Site all, Mon 15-Jul-1996 22:29:09 GMT, Crude sonic tilt analysis
I've plotted tilts over the last 10 days and get:

site	offset	pitch	roll	lean	phase
	cm/s	deg	deg	deg	deg

PAM1	-4	-0.4	1.2	1.3	70.4
PAM2	-3	0.4	0.6	0.7	126.1
PAM3	-5	1.5	-0.3	1.6	-169.0

Note that the PAM2 plot was pretty scattered, probably because we
changed the tilt after zeroing it Saturday.

All of these values are acceptable to me.

During our site visits today, I checked the radiometers (by ladder) at
PAM2 and PAM3. Both nets were a bit dirty (3 had bird poop and 2 had mud
drops), so I cleaned them. I also gave the Licor's a wipe, though they
looked pretty clean anyway.

I also releveled both nets. PAM3 had been pointing up to the SE by about
1/2 bubble and PAM2 had up to the E, by an unremembered amount. Both
Licors were level.

Both radiometers on PAM1 were pointing up to the NE by about 1/3 bubble
when I cleaned them 3 days ago.

290: SOIL, Site all, Thu 18-Jul-1996 18:42:41 GMT, CSI615 comparison to gravmoist
There now is a function "fun.add.gravmoist", (in $ASTER/apps/sfun/FLATLAND96)
which overplots gravimetric soil moisture values on a plot made by
fun.qsoil.plot, assuming a constant soil density for all 3 sites (currently
set to 2 g/cm3 to make the data work out - I should have a better guess
tomorrow after soil samples dry out). A call to this function is loaded
into the dplot menu. I chose not to have this function called by
fun.qsoil.plot itself, because fun.add.gravmoist is not general-purpose for
all projects (yet). Please see comments at the beginning of this function
on how it grabs the gravimetric values - it is pretty clumsy.

The comparison is quite variable, with a hint of a gain error, i.e. values
of soil moisture from the CSI are too high when q ~ 15% and too low when
q ~ 30%. It also is not obvious that PAM3 is any worse than the other
two stations.

I've inserted the plot into this comment, so others can see what I've seen.

PAM1: 308.40	2.5 g/cm3
PAM2: 274.71	2.2 g/cm3
PAM3: 270.41	2.2 g/cm3

Assuming that Steve S. dug out perfect 5cm x 5cm x 5cm cubes, these yield
the densities also listed above.

317: SOIL, Site all, Sat 20-Jul-1996 20:02:43 GMT, new soil densities
Well, I've just weighed the 7/17 samples which I dug out and get:

PAM1	167.57g 1.34 g/cm3
PAM2	243.97g 1.95 g/cm3
PAM3	152.39g 1.22 g/cm3

I think the PAM3 sample ended up small, though I don't know why, so it should
be discarded.

These numbers are obviously quite different than those from the 7/15 samples
which Steve S. dug out - perhaps he extracted more than 125 cm3. I am
tempted to say that there was some other problem with the PAM1 sample, and
that a density of about 2 g/cm3 is okay. We may want to get/make a core
sampler to more accurately extract a fixed volume.
318: SONIC, Site all, Sat 20-Jul-1996 22:55:12 GMT, last week's tilts agree w/previous

week's values. PAM3 is now "leaning" by 1.8 degrees, which is enough
that we will try to level it tomorrow.

356: SOIL, Site all, Fri 26-Jul-1996 14:34:44 GMT, more soil densities
From the last samples (7/22 & 7/23), the total (dry) sample weights are:

PAM1: 189.55 g => 1.52 g/cm3
PAM2: 177.24 g => 1.42 g/cm3
PAM3: 169.07 g => 1.35 g/cm3

The volumes I cut out did not look quite cubic. I would guess that they
could have been either 5 x 5 x 4 cm = 100 cm3 or 6 x 6 x 5 = 180 cm3
(rather than 5 x 5 x 5 = 125 cm3 used above). Thus, the above values
probably are only good to +/- 30%. We still need to get a soil corer
to sample accurate volumes.

(Matt thinks the volumes were 5 x 5 x 3.5 = 87.5 => 1.9 - 2.2 g/cm3)

Status of the FLATLAND96 data set for 26 Jul'96

(As we have been solving crashes and such, I've let these status reports
slide. Sorry.)

Yesterday was a LIFT intensive, with all lidars going (as well as they
can), so we ran the Fast Ozone (but we will during all days anyway).

Weather plots
We are back to a fair weather pattern, though cooler temperatures.
The 26th started clear and gradually filled up with fair weather Cu.
There was a broken ceiling through the night and into this morning.
z/L was about -0.3 to -0.5 during the day, and greater than +2
	overnight.
Winds northerly yesterday at 3 m/s, changing to light and variable
	overnight.

Dirt: All normal

Winds: Okay. It appears that PAM1 got "stuck" in the light winds last
night more than the others. This COULD be real, but probably
indicates that the bearings in the wind sensor are worn. We'll
	consider replacing it.

Temperature: Looks better with the fan working at PAM3.
However, with higher heat fluxes and lower u* at PAM3, I would
have expected | T_bph - T_hygt | to be larger than at the other
sites. Furthermore, I would have thought that T_hygt at PAM2
would be lower than normal, since it is completely surrounded
by corn. The data show delta_T greatest at PAM2 and least at PAM3
	which goes against my interpretation.

Humidity: Okay. Most sensors saturated overnight, which is consistant with
our so-far unrecorded experience of finding the corn leaves covered
with water (thus drenching anyone visiting PAM1 or PAM2) every
	morning.

Pressure: Similar to previous periods.

Radiation:
Solar radiometers: The PAM1 Licor is reading low. This may indicate
		that another cleaning is needed.
Net radiometers: Net is also higher on PAM1.

Sonic flags: Normal
        PAM1: 7 spikes on u - some on Tc
PAM2: Continuous light spiking on u and Tc.
        PAM3: 2 spikes on w

Sonics/fast scalars:
speed/dir: Okay. Note that the PAM3 sonic is now a bit higher,
so differences with the prop should be slightly smaller.
The PAM2 sonic-prop directions agree again, without
any servicing. Perhaps something in the prop head rotates
in strong winds. Someone should check this.
w: some strange things last night - the EVE data show digitizing
resolution, but even cosmos shows variations with periods
		of 3 hours.
	second order moments: all normal

Sonics/scalars
sigma Tc, wTc: Okay. The fan replacement at PAM3 helped the Tc
		comparison
        sigma H2O, wrH2O: Okay.

Overall:
Things are going all right, but there are some questions to be
	resolved.

369: LOG, Site all, Sat 27-Jul-1996 20:56:48 GMT, soils taken and heights measured
We've just done the rounds of soil and crop height measurements. See logbook
entries 35 and 39.

Matt noticed that the head of the soil moisture probe at PAM2 appeared to be
exposed. We troweled some dirt back over it and patted it down, but these data
should be treated as suspect from now on.

381: RAIN, Site all, Mon 29-Jul-1996 21:09:14 GMT, rained last night
It did indeed rain last night - first just as we were leaving at 23Z (drizzle),
and much later (07Z?) while we were in the motel. Both had thunder and
lightning.
382: SONIC, Site all, Mon 29-Jul-1996 21:41:44 GMT, sonic tilts
I've looked at the tilts for the last week, and they are pretty similar
to the two previous weeks I've looked at (see previous comments). This
is somewhat surprising since the PAM3 sonic has been moved recently.
The final tilt corrections should take the moves into account.

P.S. note that all the sonics spiked a bit in the rain overnight.
383: STATUS, Site all, Mon 29-Jul-1996 22:45:47 GMT, Status 27-29 July
Status of the FLATLAND96 data set for 27-29 Jul'96

Saturday was a LIFT intensive, though there were problems with the 2um lidar.
Sunday we took the morning off to see Allerton park (nice wasps).
Monday has been a dull day, with things basically working.

Weather plots
The atmosphere was pretty conjested over the weekend with numerous
cloud layers. Today has been a nice boundary layer day with mostly
scattered Cu. Winds have been mostly light. Temperatures have been
nice (16-26 C), though lots of humidity (saturated at night).
With all the clouds, the stability has not been far from neutral.

Dirt: Normal.

Winds: Okay. We still plan to replace the prop on PAM1 when we next drop
the tower. (We will on Wed. to install Tony's ozone sensor and to
	clean the now-dirty Krypton.)

Temperature: We now have some concerns about the hygro at PAM2 (which seems
to be about 0.5 C higher than the other sensors), but we saw no
obvious problem with it yesterday. Tomorrow is Assman IC day,
	so we'll how it does.

Humidity: Normal. I'm still bothered that the bph-hygro values aren't
consistent with my model of the humidity profile, but perhaps
strange things happen in a canopy.

Pressure: Okay.

Radiation:
Solar radiometers: The PAM1 Licor seems to be low, despite being
cleaned (it didn't look dirty). It also now has a positive
		bias at night.
        Net radiometers: Okay.

Sonic flags: Normal - some spikes during rain (last night)
PAM1: A few on u; continuous on all during rain
PAM2: Continuous light spiking on u and Tc.
PAM3: Some u, w, and Tc spikes during rain.

Sonics/fast scalars:
	speed/dir: Okay
w: Okay, tilts look similar to earlier periods with "lean" angles
		of 1, 0.5, and 1.8 degrees, respectively.
	second order moments: all normal

Sonics/scalars
sigma Tc, wTc: Okay. Still adam-pam differences due to despiking.
sigma H2O, wrH2O: Okay. There are adam-pam differences in rh2o:rh2o
for some reason - did we explain this before?

Overall:
We haven't had a cosmos crash in 2 days, though we haven't changed
anything since the previous crash. Maybe a neighbor with a cellular
	telephone has gone on vacation!

386: RAD, Site all, Tue 30-Jul-1996 02:47:17 GMT, full moon
I'm out for the first time tonight and notice that the full moon (through
thin cirrus clouds) is reasonably bright - possibly enough to register on
the Licors. Thus, don't treat values around now as a bias!
388: SOIL, Site all, Tue 30-Jul-1996 15:41:47 GMT, latest soil densities
The dry weights of the total samples taken 7/27/96 are:

PAM1:	172.5g => 1.38g/cm3
PAM2:	192.3g => 1.54g/cm3
PAM3:	177.9g => 1.42g/cm3

Matt and I feel more confident that these were true 125cm3 samples, so
I suggest that we go with 1.4 g/cm3 as the density.

Also on station 1: took site photos and loaded new configuration. The
new configuration adds error data points for the three analog
processes (ozone, Tsurface, and power). These parameters are mostly
for software testing and debugging.

Data Systems
Adam covars down from 1700 to 1900 GMT yesterday. Problems with covar
software. PAM has been up.

Network link is down this morning. Net66 phone is not answering.
Attempts to get ahold of Net66 for help have so far been
unsuccessful. Possible that some people take Sunday off--although it
is not clear why.

Dirt: ok

Winds: ok Swapped prop on PAM 1 seems to be reasonably well aligned
with the old one. Swap has not really changed the differences
which have been noted between PAM 1 and PAM 2.

Temp:	station 1 Trh is much lower during the night than Band pass unit.
BPH seems to be in line with the rest of the network, but Trh temp
gets down about 5 deg C lower.

487: SONIC, Site all, Tue 17-Sep-1996 22:35:19 GMT, Averaging periods, angles and heights for the PAM1, PAM2 and PAM3 sonics
The sonic data for the three sites were examined in order to ascertain
the time intervals over which to integrate data to define the pitch.

Three primary sources of information were considered:
    project long plots of fun.var.plot("alev.atik.3m.pam1/2/3")
project long plots of tilt <- fun.sonic.tilt.summary("atik.3m.pam1/2/3")
This function plotted w offset, lean, and azimuth as three panels
logbook. The logbook was search to account for specific details indicated
by features exhibited by the plots.

490: SONIC, Site all, Fri 20-Sep-1996 16:47:50 GMT, Averaging periods, angles and heights for the PAM1, PAM2 and PAM3 sonics
The sonic data for each of the three sites were separated into several separate
intervals, following the analysis given in Logbook entry #287.
The tilt program:
              fun.sonic.tilt.plot("atik.3m.pam1/2/3")
was then operated upon each sonic data period and the coefficients calculated.

Derived Barometer Elevations:

Are provided given the GPS data Kurt obtained and Unavco post
processed. The Unavco readings are adjusted by subtracting the
measured relative antenna heights that Kurt reported in his logbook
message #461.

NOTE1: the full text provided by Unavco is included at the bottom of
this message. I don't recommend reading it.
NOTE2: I don't know what the station 'PAM1-PAM1' was but i suspect
these numbers came from a short file obtained on Kurt's first
attempt which only had 11 minutes of data. The details in
the Unavco printout below indicate that PAM1-FLATLAND coincides
with the measurement times when Kurt did the 'real' survey on
the 11th, that he recorded in the log and on hand written paper.

Least Squares Fit
=================

Fit of the gravimetric soil measurements to the raw time output of the CS615
probes. With this fit, the equation for V(%volume) is solved to find values
for tair and tsdry. Using the slope and intercept values from the L.S. fit,
the following equations are solved.

tair = 1/15625 * (1966.826/slope + 10752)

tsdry = -1 * intercept * (15625 * tair - 10752) / 1966.826

Assumptions:

density of soil is 1.5 g/cm^3
Temperature errors of CS615 are ignored

Solutions are presented only for the probes matched with their soil
sample.

Conclusions
===========

The lab results from inserting the probes in oven dried soil samples do not
agree with the least squares fit. Since the gravimetric readings are as close
to a reference standard as possible, the data from the least squares fit would
seem to be more plausible. However, this means there is an unexplained
discrepancy between the field and lab data.

Two plots are included with this log entry. The first plots shows the time
series of the original and L.S. fit corrected soil moistures. The second plot
shows the CS615-gravimetric error versus time. There seems to be some
correlation between time and the moisture error. As the errors tend closer to
0 towards the end of the project, this suggests some settling time for the
probes to become integrated with the soil. In the case of station 3,
a large crack in the soil was observed during the project. This may have been
the cause of the larger errors at this site.

Another plot showing error versus moisture was generated, but is not included
here. There did not appear to be a correlation between the moisture and the
error reading.

493: HYGRO, Site all, Wed 23-Oct-1996 16:11:34 GMT, Hygrothermometer ASSMAN intercomparison results
During the operation period of FLATLAND96, routine intercomparison tests were
conducted between the hygrothermometers and an ASSMAN psychrometer. A typical
test took place in the early afternoon consisting of 10 data points collected
over a 5 minute period.

The ASSMAN IC plot shows the difference between the ASSMAN and each
hygrothermometer. The positive mean error value for the temperature difference
is due to the radiation affects on the hygrothermometer shield. The humidity
errors are within a 2% window.

STATION TRH - ASSMAN
		temperature (C) humidity (%)
PAM 1 0.15 0.2
PAM 2 0.28 1.7
PAM 3 0.18 1.4

494: PROP, Site all, Wed 23-Oct-1996 17:40:21 GMT, Post calibration check of PROP-VANE
A performance check was done on the propeller-vane instruments
after FLATLAND96 operations. This included the 3 PAM III units and
the one RM Young unit. Starting threshold and prop pitch
calibrations were checked.
The starting thresholds were below 0.5 m/s for all instruments. The
prop pitch calibrations were a different story. Unfortunately the
incorrect prop pitch calibration factors were used in the instruments
during FLATLAND96. The pitch values corresponded to 23cm propellers used
with the ASTER sensors while 18cm propellers were used in FLATALND96.
Since the transfer function to convert raw data to calibrated data is
a simple multiplier factor, based on the prop pitch, we can correct
the data.
The table below gives the correct prop pitch for the propellers used
during FLATLAND96. The table also provides the correction factor to used
to correct the data. This factor will be applied to the NETCDF data set.
The raw data set will not be modified.

Sensor (old pitch) PROP S/N PITCH Correction Factor station
001 (310) 44341 303 0.98 PAM 1
002 (309) 48267 299 0.97 PAM 2
003 (308) 44344 302 0.98 PAM 3
RMYoung (300) 44341 303 1.01 PAM 1

NOTE: The RM YOung instrument replaced sensor 001 at site 1 on Aug. 1, 1996.

495: HYGRO, Site all, Wed 23-Oct-1996 21:26:58 GMT, Hygrothermometer & BPH comparisons
GENERAL:
At the end of operations, the BPH instrument was moved down to the
height of the TRH to allow for a side-by-side comparison. Data were collected
over a 24 hour period. It should be pointed out that the data from station
1 was collected approximately 24 hours after station 2 and 3. In general,
the side-by-side test highlighted the radiation problem with the TRH
shield and the effects of contamination on the humidity transducer.

TEMEPRATURE:
Graphics TCOMP PLOT shows a comparison of the temperature response of
the two instruments over time along with the net radiation response. The
affects of solar radiation on the TRH shield are quite obvious from
17:00 to 01:00 GMT. The dramatic change, in station 3, from 23:00 to
2:00 GMT is believe to related to the crop conditions. The instruments
at stations 1 and 2 were in the upper leafs of the corn where the radiation
affects were not as great as at station 3 where the sensors were fully
exposed. At night time, the temperature differences should have approached
zero assuming the calibrations were correct. As can be seen in the plot,
the data did not support this concept. The post project check did show
a mean error of -0.18 C in the TRH temperature sensor at station 3.
This would change the mean error of station 3 to -0.11 C. At this time
nothing has been found to explain the results at station 2.

RELATIVE HUMIDITY:
Graphics RHCOMP PLOT is a difference plot between the TRH and BPH with
respect to humidity. What immediately jumps out is the difference in the
response of station 1 compared to stations 2 and 3. The environment the
sensors were exposed to can not be the cause because stations 1 and 2
were located in the same environment. Another possible cause was the data
acquisition systems used to collect the BandPass data. The BandPass instruments,
at stations 2 and 3, were interfaced to the older ATI sonics. A check of the
A/D system of the sonics did not explain the difference. A third possible
cause is the calibration of the sensors.
The post calibration check of the sensors can be seen in POSTCAL PLOT.
An important aspect of this plot is the response of the BPH sensors compared
to the TRH. This difference is due to the BPH humidity transducers being
directly exposed to the atmosphere while the TRH transducers were protected
by a filter. This was confirmed by cleaning the BPH transducers and repeating
the test in the humidity chamber. A second factor in this plot was the
difference in the response of BPH sensor between station 1 and stations 2 and 3.
This difference may explain the issue brought out in RHCOMP PLOT.
To explore this assumption, a simple linear correction was computed for
each individual sensor using the data from POSTCAL PLOT. The fit was
applied only from 60% to 90% representing the range of data collected
during the field side-by-side check (note: it was assumed that the 90%
point for stat1 - BPH was a bad data point and was therefore not used
in the fit for this sensor). The correction fits were applied to the field
data and plotted. RHCOR PLOT shows the results. Station 1 shows little change
as we would hope. Station 2 shows an improvement in the slope of the data and
a offset in the mean error. There is a significant change in the offset
of station 3 and a small improvement in the slope.
