- 17: STATUS, Site 3, Mon 10-Jun-1996 22:15:12 GMT, EVE / DCOM332 Problems at Station 3
Yesterday, 6/9,96,
Kurt & I went to station 3 to finish some of the setup.
During the visit we were unable to talk to EVE with the Compaq.
It appeared that the Compaq wasn't transmitting to EVE so i cycled
power on EVE to observe the bootup sequence. At first that went OK,
however because the Compaq still wasn't sending to EVE, i tried it
again. On the second power cycle of EVE, it died with only the
boot message: adding 3 symbols to the table.
given instead of the entire bootup sequence of EVE.
We brought the box back to the trailer and apparently 'fixed' the problem
by removing the DCOM 3V battery (which read 3.15V) and letting it 'flush'
the non-volatile. We then were able to download a config file and run
'properly.' The box was powered down overnight, powered up today to
verify operation and then.
Today, 6/10/96, the box was installed back on the station.
At that point it was working, but when Kurt went into 'entersys' - 'goes'
- 'self-test' it once again died. The symptom was that all files in the
non-volatile got erased, including the config.dat.
Later, we went back to the station during a lull in the rain and i was
able to download a correct config from the Toshiba and restart normally.
HOWEVER, we decided to replace the VME power supply in hopes that is where
the problem may be. Upon power up, the boot sequence was wrong. It turned
out that the config.dat was corrupted but only slightly. i copied the
backup sta003.dat to config and restarted: that worked.
Conclusion: DCOM332 has problems or much less likely the software. We'll
buy some new 3V batteries and replace the existing ones in hopes that'll help
the problem.
- 19: STATUS, Site 2, Tue 11-Jun-1996 20:05:36 GMT, station 2 visit
station 2 had the prop vane boom aligned, and a nominal of 135.0 deg for

the prop vane boom was aligned, and the boom azimuth was set to a nominal of
135.0 deg.
the prop has a slight bend to the shaft, but performance seems to be OK
the ATI sonic was zeroed, and leveled to better then a 10th of a degree.
a problem exists with the tsfc sensor, but it was left on the station
to see if it would "dry out" and come back.
- 24: STATUS, Site 1, Wed 12-Jun-1996 22:51:04 GMT, Sensor installation, station #1
Work at station #1:
Installed PAM data system.
Free-wave RF modem working okay with antenna on tripod.
Checked power output of GOES transmitter (12.4 W)
Aligned prop-vane to boom, shot angle (131 deg 38' 12"), and
entered 131.6 into prop-vane.
Installed hygrothermometer.
Polished lower surface of pressure port.
Added oil to ETI range gauge.
Installed extension cable for Rnet to Campbell.
Installed Krypton hygrometer #1133.
Installed bph #23, but not reporting; recycled power and appears to
be okay.
Installed ATI sonic #3.
Leveled sonic within 0.1 degrees.
Shot ATI v axis at 131 deg 23'
Sonic electronics box was dry inside, except for a small amount of
condensation. However Kurt drilled a hole for future drainage and
to alleviate future condensation.
Intiallized cabling setup for ingest of data to ADAM.
Found mismatch in PAM/ASTER DC power connectors. Used 2 batteries
until we receive cables from Boulder.
- 27: STATUS, Site 3, Thu 13-Jun-1996 18:58:48 GMT, Sensor installation, station #3
Work at station #3:
Moved radiation stand several feet north to avoid shadow of PAM
mast in late afternoon.
Installed Licor pyranometer S/N 7121.
Noted REBS Q7 net radiometer is S/N 94197.
Leveled both radiometers.
Installed bph #40, but data looks bad.
Lowered PAM mast to remove inoperative Everest IRT and cable.
Checked sonic levels (ok to < 0.1 deg) after raising mast.
Shot angle of prop-vane boom (138 deg 25' 07") and entered into
prop-vane (138.6).
Shot angle of sonic "v" axis at 140 deg 11' 50".
Installed soil sensors to ENE of rain gauge, between two E/W rows of
soybeans. Soil heat flux plate is at 5 cm depth and soil moisture
probe is installed with its rods horizontal at a depth of 2.5 cm. Soil
temperature probe was inserted at an angle between the surface and
roughly 5 cm depth.
Soil heat flux plate is S/N 943147.
Soil temperature probe is S/N 94016.
Soil moisture sensor is CS615 S/N 002.
ETI Precip Gauge: S/N 051 (9/15/94)
ATI:
Removed bolt in bottom surface of sonic electronics box to allow water
to drain out. Mopped up water from bottom of interior.

Work at PAM site #2
Installed hygrothermometer.
Shot prop boom angle at 126 deg 27' 35",
entered angle into EVE (126.5)
Checked sonic level and okay to at least 0.1 deg.
Shot angle of sonic "v" axis at 125 deg 10' 48"
Zeroed sonic uvw axes.
Installed bph#27. It is working okay.
ETI is Model 8205-00500, S/N 057
Kurt painted the radiation stand leg extensions black.
Installed Licor pyranometer PY9024 and REBS net radiometer
Q94125, leveled both radiometers
Installed heat flux plate H943148, soil moisture sensor
SN003 (CS615 #8688 LT#417624), and soil temperature
sensor STP94015.
Installed soil sensors NE of rain gauge between N/S corn rows.
This is soil/radiation sensor set #1, but Campbell logger is
#3, so we removed the logger to swap with that at site #1
(where we installed sensor set #3).
- 30: STATUS, Site 1, Fri 14-Jun-1996 15:27:39 GMT, Swapped Campbell at Station 1
Campbell Logger:
Replaced unit #1 and installed unit #3
in order to match the sensors that were installed
at station1 to the logger that's programmed with
their coefficients.
Tsfc Test:
We tried out the 'questionable' tsfc sensor that
was taken off of station #3 the other day after it
had 'failed' during or after a rain storm. It did
report good looking values, however, an occassional
glitch was seen. It appears that either the sensor
has dried out or else there's a problem with the
a/d at station 3.
- 35: STATUS, Site 1, Fri 14-Jun-1996 20:19:57 GMT, power to station 1 now from the adam
power to station 1 now comes from cosmos' power distribution box
the atik is also routed into cosmos channel 200
and the Krypton is on channel 108
- 52: STATUS, Site 3, Mon 17-Jun-1996 14:38:00 GMT, Replaced Everest, checked prop alignment, painted rad stand
Visit to station #3 on the afternoon of June 16, about 1400-1500 CDT.
Lowered the mast in order to replace the Everest on the 10m crossarm
(pointing down to the NW at 45 degrees). John found a blown fuse
in the line providing power to the Everest, so this was part of the
problem. The fuse will be replaced, hopefully today.
Temporarily disconnected the bandpass hygrometer because the cable
interferred with lowering the mast. Reconnected it to eliminate the
interference.
While the mast was lowered we checked the alignment of the prop-vane
by holding it paralled to the crossarm and looking at the output. It
appears to be correct.
See a separate entry regarding work on the sonic anemometer.
John touched up the radiation stand with black paint.

0.3 mm. This is because 1/100" = 0.3 mm is equivalent to
a single tip and a very light rain sometimes just "tops off"
a tip.
Radiation
Net radiometers: P1 = P2 > P3 ie both corn crops are equal radiatively
and the bare soil at the bean crop still reflects the most
Solar radiometers:All equivalent as expected
Dirt One of the corn crop furrows run E-W the other N-S
Which PAM station is in the E-W and which is in N-S?
Temperatures: At night all approach uniform value. I would expect P3 to
become cooler
Moisture: P1 < P2 < P3 I would think that P3, the bare soil would be driest
Heat fluxes: P3 still has the greatest heat flux and P2 shows the effect
of sunshine penetration only near noon.

u*: Pretty good correlation with wind speed during strong
(<4 m/s) winds, which says that the drag coefficient

directions were mostly northerly or southerly, thus
the same roughness would be observed). Also, a dirunal

stability (z/L) (from weather plot): stays less than 1

heat is not too large. Very stable (often > +2) during
the night. It should be interesting to look at lidar

Overall:
The cloud development in the late morning is pretty dramatic -
it will be interesting to build a picture of the entire

The corn has been flattened in many areas. There are groups of 1-10 plants
which are now leaning severely or even flattened after yesterday's rain
at this site. It could be associated with the wind or heavy rain, but I
suspect it may just be that the now wet soil isn't supporting the weight
of the plants well. I tried to step carefully (not easy when carrying a
ladder) to avoid damaging the crop further. [I plan to take some pictures
today.]
Also note with this site that the hay area which was moved significantly
changes the fetch from the north (which would have been different anyway).
Fluxes when winds are within about 30 degrees from north should not be
interpretted as representative of corn.
Something else we noted in PAM's Compaq log yesterday - one egg at station 1
has hatched, so we now have a hungry chick! We're trying to avoid further
visits - at least to the tripod area.
P.S. We may want to add another logbook category for this type of comment.

Weather plots
No surprises:
- rain on the morning of the 14th and night of the 15th.
- strong (8 m/s) winds during the 14 associated with the rain
otherwise, persistently about 4 m/s from SW (where the sonics
are aligned to) thus stabilities have been close to neutral
(|z/L| ~ 0.3).
PAM3: Stronger latent heat fluxes now that soil is moist,
Dirt:
Temperatures: A few degrees lower now that the soil is wet
Moisture: Wetter (obviously). I've worked up the gravimetric
samples, but a comparison is difficult since the PAM
probes are % by volume. We'll try to make a soil density
measurement. We also note a diurnal variation of up to
5% at PAM3 (also noted by Tom). Tom's CSI615 correction
code appears to do the right computation, but the
correction is at least a factor of 3 too small to explain
this cycle.
Heat fluxes: Seem reasonable, quite large fluxes at PAM3.
Winds:
PAM3: Higher winds since z-d=10m, rather than 8m at 1&2
Directions pretty consistent, with biggest difference between
PAM1 and 2&3 (to be expected). Also some expected differences
in light winds.
Pressure: Larger variations than earlier during rain - probably real.
Temperature:
Generally somewhat cooler since cold air associated with the rain
(or should this be vice versa?) came in.
Differences: Hygt is cooler IN corn than OVER beans, which is to
be expected.
Humidity:
Relative Humidity: Most sensors have been saturated after rain.
Some odd differences between PAM1 and PAM2. We expect
PAM2 hygt to be large (especially at night) since it
is in the canopy, but both hygt and bph at PAM1 are also
relatively high. We need to look at the biases from the
Assman IC to interpret these differences.

sigma Tc, wTc: PAM3's higher sigma Tc is offset by lower sigma w, so
fluxes are about the same as the other sites.
(Since latent heat fluxes at PAM3 are lower, and net is the
same, the rest of the heat is going into the ground.)
sigma H2O, wrH2O: Why do the daily plots use hygt and not bph as a reference? I may change this.
The krypton may be having problems (we didn't bag it in

Net radiometers:
Solar radiometers: PAM1 still reads negative at night. We're

PAM3
Sonic flags: We're pretty happy with this performance and won't change things.
PAM1: Got a few spikes overnight last night - still not too bad.
PAM2: Still light spiking on u.
PAM3: Just a few spikes on w, despite high temps. Steve's latest
board swap may have done the trick.
Sonics/fast scalars:
speed/dir: There is now a 5 degree difference between sonic and
prop directions - perhaps this occured during the strong
crosswinds on 14 July, though it isn't obvious - we'll
put reshooting the directions on our list.
Sonics/scalars
sigma Tc, wTc: PAM1 tc spikes over most of 17 Jul probably are a
problem with the despiking routine - tc:tc variance also
different between pam1 and adam1.
sigma H2O, wrH2O:
- w:rH2O is not consistent with fluxes in wx.plot. I'll check this.
- Krypton now about 3 g/m3 high - We plan to clean it tomorrow.
- bph and krypton variances agree well (except at night). bph fluxes
are lower, as expected.

Status of the FLATLAND96 data set for 18-19 Jul'96
(We are still having daily plot crashes, but I now have a "redo_dailies"
script which does the ones which bomb. I'm still not sure why this is
necessary. The crontab change didn't work.)
Weather plots
The 19th was interesting: A forecasted storm to the south never
materialized, but there was a continual shift from SW to NE flow.
We are now in a cooler (20 C) drier (10 g/kg) flow from the Great
Lakes. It was a tough tailwind for yesterday's bike ride home,
but great this morning!
|z/L| generally 0.1 or less.
Dirt: All pretty normal - we still have doubts about moisture.
Winds: No surprises
Temperature: No surprises. Both the temperature and humidity difference
plots are hard to interpret because biases in the sensors are of
the same magnitude as the differences between 2m and 3m (or 6m).
If we want to use these differences, biases of the T/RH sensors
need to be characterized. (We have done 3 sets of Assman ICs on
the hygrothermometers, but the results from these ICs don't appear
to help the interpretation). Steve S. suggests running bph and hygt
at the same level for a day during tear-down.
Humidity: Cleaning the bph sensors makes bph and hygt agree more (though the
comparison is getting worse again)
Pressure: Similar to previous periods, though last evening, the differences
were smaller. There is a weak correlation between strong, North
winds and smaller pressure differences between stations 1 and 2&3
looking at previous data.
Radiation:
Net radiometers: The dramatic drop in the magnitude of net overnight
last night at 06Z probably is real, associated with clouds
moving in.
Solar radiometers: The replacement of the PAM1 sensor appears to
have fixed our negative nocturnal radiation.
Sonic flags: Staying relatively stable
PAM1: Continuing to see Tc spikes on EVE
PAM2: Still light spiking on u.
PAM3: Pretty good.
Sonics/fast scalars:
speed/dir: The 5 degree difference between sonic and prop directions
is not from the sonic. We'll read check the prop direction
next time we drop PAM1 or PAM2.
w: PAM3 apparently is tilted, since a 20 cm/s bias switch sign after
this wind direction change. I computed a pitch angle of
1.5 degrees last week - I'll do another check of tilts soon.
second order moments: all normal
Sonics/scalars
sigma Tc, wTc: Again, large variance differences between ADAM and
EVE computations when EVE detects spikes, but less effect
on the fluxes.
sigma H2O, wrH2O: Krypton cleaning yesterday fixed bias differences.

Status of the FLATLAND96 data set for 26 Jul'96
(As we have been solving crashes and such, I've let these status reports
slide. Sorry.)
Yesterday was a LIFT intensive, with all lidars going (as well as they
can), so we ran the Fast Ozone (but we will during all days anyway).
Weather plots
We are back to a fair weather pattern, though cooler temperatures.
The 26th started clear and gradually filled up with fair weather Cu.
There was a broken ceiling through the night and into this morning.
z/L was about -0.3 to -0.5 during the day, and greater than +2
overnight.
Winds northerly yesterday at 3 m/s, changing to light and variable
overnight.
Dirt: All normal
Winds: Okay. It appears that PAM1 got "stuck" in the light winds last
night more than the others. This COULD be real, but probably
indicates that the bearings in the wind sensor are worn. We'll
consider replacing it.
Temperature: Looks better with the fan working at PAM3.
However, with higher heat fluxes and lower u* at PAM3, I would
have expected | T_bph - T_hygt | to be larger than at the other
sites. Furthermore, I would have thought that T_hygt at PAM2
would be lower than normal, since it is completely surrounded
by corn. The data show delta_T greatest at PAM2 and least at PAM3
which goes against my interpretation.
Humidity: Okay. Most sensors saturated overnight, which is consistant with
our so-far unrecorded experience of finding the corn leaves covered
with water (thus drenching anyone visiting PAM1 or PAM2) every
morning.
Pressure: Similar to previous periods.
Radiation:
Solar radiometers: The PAM1 Licor is reading low. This may indicate
that another cleaning is needed.
Net radiometers: Net is also higher on PAM1.
Sonic flags: Normal
PAM1: 7 spikes on u - some on Tc
PAM2: Continuous light spiking on u and Tc.
PAM3: 2 spikes on w
Sonics/fast scalars:
speed/dir: Okay. Note that the PAM3 sonic is now a bit higher,
so differences with the prop should be slightly smaller.
The PAM2 sonic-prop directions agree again, without
any servicing. Perhaps something in the prop head rotates
in strong winds. Someone should check this.
w: some strange things last night - the EVE data show digitizing
resolution, but even cosmos shows variations with periods
of 3 hours.
second order moments: all normal
Sonics/scalars
sigma Tc, wTc: Okay. The fan replacement at PAM3 helped the Tc
comparison
sigma H2O, wrH2O: Okay.
Overall:
Things are going all right, but there are some questions to be
resolved.

Status of the FLATLAND96 data set for 27-29 Jul'96
Saturday was a LIFT intensive, though there were problems with the 2um lidar.
Sunday we took the morning off to see Allerton park (nice wasps).
Monday has been a dull day, with things basically working.
Weather plots
The atmosphere was pretty conjested over the weekend with numerous
cloud layers. Today has been a nice boundary layer day with mostly
scattered Cu. Winds have been mostly light. Temperatures have been
nice (16-26 C), though lots of humidity (saturated at night).
With all the clouds, the stability has not been far from neutral.
Dirt: Normal.
Winds: Okay. We still plan to replace the prop on PAM1 when we next drop
the tower. (We will on Wed. to install Tony's ozone sensor and to
clean the now-dirty Krypton.)
Temperature: We now have some concerns about the hygro at PAM2 (which seems
to be about 0.5 C higher than the other sensors), but we saw no
obvious problem with it yesterday. Tomorrow is Assman IC day,
so we'll how it does.
Humidity: Normal. I'm still bothered that the bph-hygro values aren't
consistent with my model of the humidity profile, but perhaps
strange things happen in a canopy.
Pressure: Okay.
Radiation:
Solar radiometers: The PAM1 Licor seems to be low, despite being
cleaned (it didn't look dirty). It also now has a positive
bias at night.
Net radiometers: Okay.
Sonic flags: Normal - some spikes during rain (last night)
PAM1: A few on u; continuous on all during rain
PAM2: Continuous light spiking on u and Tc.
PAM3: Some u, w, and Tc spikes during rain.
Sonics/fast scalars:
speed/dir: Okay
w: Okay, tilts look similar to earlier periods with "lean" angles
of 1, 0.5, and 1.8 degrees, respectively.
second order moments: all normal
Sonics/scalars
sigma Tc, wTc: Okay. Still adam-pam differences due to despiking.
sigma H2O, wrH2O: Okay. There are adam-pam differences in rh2o:rh2o
for some reason - did we explain this before?
Overall:
We haven't had a cosmos crash in 2 days, though we haven't changed
anything since the previous crash. Maybe a neighbor with a cellular
telephone has gone on vacation!
