We originally numbered the PAM stations, from north to south, 1,3,2.
This has been somewhat confusing, so this morning we swapped stations
2 and 3 so that they are now numbered 1,2,3 from north to south.

I changed entry numbers 7-10 and 13 to reflect this change.

Site 1

6/20/96  

The station is nominally located 1/4 mile east of the center of Section
2, T18N, R7E; 1/2 mile south of road 1200N and 1/4 mile west of road
500E.  The station is located on the north edge of a cornfield that
extends roughly 1/4 mile to the east, south, and west.  The field to 
the north of the station is also corn, but is broken up by N/S strips 
of grass extending south about 1/4 mile from the vicinity of the 
Bondville FAO driveway.

The corn to the south of the station is planted in E/W rows with a
spacing of 30 inches and is currently (6/20/96) about 60 cm high.  The
corn in the immediate vicinity of and north of the station is also in
E/W rows, but is currently only 40 cm high.

6/22/96:  Corn to south of station is 30" (76 cm) high.  To the north
of the station it is 18" (45 cm) high.

6/25/96: I measured the corn height on 6/25/96 to the Southwest of station 1.
Max height: about 42"
Avg height: about 35-36"
Min height: about 31-32"

Site 2

6/18/96  

The station is located in the nominal center of the NW 1/4 of Section
26, T18N, R7E; 1/4 mile south of road 800N and 1/4 mile east of road
400E.  This 1/4 section is planted in corn.

The corn is planted in rows with a spacing of 30 inches.  To the SW,
SE, and NW of the station, the rows are oriented E/W, but to the NE of
the station the rows are oriented N/S.  However, all the rows in the
immediate vicinity of the station are oriented N/S.  

The corn is nominally about 0.75 m high, but some is as high as 0.9 m.
There is a good stand of corn under the radiation stand and in the
vicinity of the soil sensors, but the Everest is looking at a low wet
area that has a weak stand of scattered corn about 0.5 m tall.

Site 3

6/16/96  

The station is located in the nominal center of the SW 1/4 of Section
26, T18N, R7E; 1/4 mile north of road 700N and 1/4 mile east of road
400E.  This 1/4 section should eventually be planted in soybeans.

Field to north of station (1/4 mile to N, to E, and to W) is planted in
soybeans, currently 2-5 cm high.  The beans are planted in rows
oriented predominantly E/W (except for N/S end-rows at the east(?) and
west ends of the field); the rows appear to have a spacing of 7.5 in.

The field to the south of the station (1/4 mile to S, to E, and to W)
is currently unplanted.  It has standing corn stubble from last year's
crop.

The station is located on the southern edge of the planted section.

6/22/96:  The field to the south of the station was recently planted.
The beans to the north of the station are 4" (10 cm) high.

6/24/96:  The beans to the south are beginning to emerge from the
ground.

7/2/96:  The beans are about 0.1m along the fetch angle.

102: LOG, Site none, Tue 25-Jun-1996 15:14:57 GMT, Maintenance 
Measure and record the crop heights at each station on a regular
basis.  Most stations are at intersections of different plantings, so
the crop height will be different in different directions.  These are
recorded in a logbook entry dated June 17.  Station photos should be made
on perhaps a weekly or bi-weekly basis to record the changes in the
crops.  Take some regular photos also of the crop under the net
radiometer, over the soil sensors, and under the Everest.

Don't trample the crops under the net radiometer, over the soil sensors
or under the Everest IRT.  The Everest footprint extends along a line
to the NW of the station and between 7m and 13 m from the station.  The
footprint width (in the SW/NE direction) is about 3m.

Keep the sonics at a height between 3 and 4 meters above the top of the
crop canopy to the SW of the station.  Don't forget to relevel the
sonic after you move it.  The sonic height (above the ground) can be
determined by measuring along the lowered mast to the hinge point and
then measuring from the hinge point to the surface.  The sonic heights
are recorded in a logbook entry dated June 25.

There are no filters on the bandpass hygrometer 50Ys.  Steve Semmer will
determine a maintenance procedure for cleaning these.

Take soil samples and make gravimetric soil moisture measurements as
often as possible.
172: LOG, Site all, Tue 02-Jul-1996 22:01:08 GMT, Crop height

270:  LOG,  Site all,    Mon 15-Jul-1996 19:56:11 GMT,   roughness lengths


Here are some very crude estimates of roughness lengths.  I have made an
eyeball average of the u*/spd daily plot for the last 10 days and get
u*/U = 0.07 (beans) and 0.11 (corn) for daytime values.  Since these
values are pretty steady, I assume they represent neutral conditions also,
so we can say:  u*/U = k/ ln(z/zo).  Letting z=10m (beans) and 8.4m (corn),
I get zo = 3cm (beans) and 22cm (corn), which seems a bit large.




328:  LOG,  Site 1,    Mon 22-Jul-1996 22:51:45 GMT,   Tower was down about 18Z today


We dropped the tower (with both robins) today to install the ozone inlet.

As long as it was down, I cleaned the krypton (which was filthy - I think
the robins are sabotaging it!).  The krypton signal level looks pretty good
now.  

I also opened up and popped the connectors on the BPH (at Steve S.'s
suggestion) to try to reduce the noise we've seen on the temperature.
It looks somewhat better, but I'll give it more time before declaring
it fixed.




330:  LOG,  Site 1,    Tue 23-Jul-1996 15:24:15 GMT,   station 1 electrical power


Since we had some brownouts yesterday, I made some power measurements - the
quick summary is that we seem to be balanced perfectly:

Greg's pump (off one side of the transformer): 8.2 A
The chem shelter, with air conditioner and ozone (off the other side): 4.5 A
Adam and PAM: (also off the other side) 3.5A

Thus, 8.2 A of the pump is balanced by 8.0 A of the other stuff.  This is
well within the range of the 20 A breaker on the input and 15 A breakers on
each of the outputs of the transformer.

(Therefore, the cosmos crash probably wasn't power related.)



345:  LOG,  Site none,    Thu 25-Jul-1996 17:54:53 GMT,   Calculation of white noise


Since Greg would like us to look at ozone spectra, I thought it would be 
useful to review here how to obtain values for white noise levels.
Since white noise, by definition, has the same amplitude at all frequencies,
its total variance is simply the average amplitude of the spectra where
noise is observed (usually the high frequencies) times the bandwidth of the
data.  The bandwidth of the data is from 1/averaging period, which is usually
small so we call it 0, to the Nyquist frequency.  However, the Nyquist 
frequency also is the highest frequency plotted on power spectral plots.

THEREFORE, the variance due to white noise is simply the amplitude of the
power spectra at the highest frequency (usually 5 or 10 Hz) when plotted as 
frequency * spectra (which is the default in fun.plot.prep).  The standard 
deviation is the square root of this variance.

For example, the attached spectral plot from an hour ago shows white noise
on conc.O3 with a variance of 0.002 V^2, which gives a standard deviation
of 0.04 V (or 0.8ppb with Greg's nominal gain of 20).  This is the same value
that we saw a few days ago when Greg installed this instrument. 
h2o.csi has no white noise (yeah!).  
Both w.atik and tc.atik appear to have noise at 0.025 (m/s)^2 = 0.16 m/s 
and 0.007 C^2 = 0.03 C respectively, but this is an artifact of combining
10 sample/sec and 20 sample/sec data.

We've just done the rounds of soil and crop height measurements.  See logbook
entries 35 and 39.

Matt noticed that the head of the soil moisture probe at PAM2 appeared to be 
exposed.  We troweled some dirt back over it and patted it down, but these data
should be treated as suspect from now on.

Also on station 1: took site photos and loaded new configuration.  The
new configuration adds error data points for the three analog
processes (ozone, Tsurface, and power).  These parameters are mostly
for software testing and debugging.

The PAM mast was lowered for an hour on Wed 31 Jul 96 to replace 
the propvane and install the SECLOD ozone sensor.

The PAM mast was lowered for a half hour at 1700 on Friday 1 Aug 96
to recable the SECLOD.

The battery voltage at station 3 has been abnormally high while
charging in the daytime.  Yesterday, the voltage looked OK for awhile,
and then it popped up to 17V.  See the attached plots.

the windows were cleaned on the krypton at 19:00 today - didn't look bad
but mast was down to service SECLOD so I cleaned them anyway.
Matt was noticing a slight offset in the data for the CSI - will see if
cleaning helped tomorrow.




442:  LOG,  Site base,    Sun 11-Aug-1996 21:30:04 GMT,   GPS readings repeated for base and Pam1


GPS readings for the base station and station 1 were taken yesterday but had to
be repeated today due to faulty programing on the base station receiver.
thought I had it set up to take 24 hrs of data through 18:30 today, but when
I went to download, I found only 10 min from yesterday just before the program 
was to begin! readings must be concurrent so station 1 was repeated also and
it looks like everything was successful.
quality control checks are not possible yet due to the PC being minus a
math coprocessor. I will check with UNAVCO tommorrow to see if anything else
can be done.
GPS antenna height was transfered to pam station through the use of the
transit.


center of lens of transit is 19 cm above choke ring ( the altitude that the GPS
data will provide to us ). the height of the transfer via transit to the pam
station #1 was 73 cm above the pressure port, and 205.8 cm above the bottom of
the electronics box.
therefore, GPS derived altitude is 186.8 cm above bottom of box and 54 cm above
pressure port.
(by the way, a measurement was taken from the choke ring to the surface and from
the surface to the bottom of the electronics box, as an alternate method of 
transfering antenna height to the pam station, and it was off by a whopping
4.6 cm! seems like the transit is a lot of effort when the GPS accuracy is
only good to within a half a meter!)

GPS readings for the base station and Pam 1-3, and both ISS trailers are
now completed, along with quality checks.
results are as follows:

GPS antenna height was transfered to pam station through the use of the
transit.


PamIII station 1:

	Gps derived altitude - 186.8 cm = height of elctronic box bottom
	Gps derived altitude - 54.0 cm = height of external pressure port

PamIII station 2:

	Gps derived altitude - 158.0 cm = height of electronic box bottom
	Gps derived altitude - 28.0 cm = height of external pressure port

PamIII station 3:

	Gps derived altitude - 40.6 cm = height of electronics box bottom
	Gps derived altitude + 91.6 cm = height of external pressure port

Monticello ISS (ISS #1)

	Gps derived altitude - 24.0 cm = height of port on pressure sensor
	Gps derived altitude + 59.0 cm = height of external pressure port

Senica ISS (ISS #3)

	Gps derived altitude - 5.0 cm = height of port on pressure sensor
	Gps derived altitude + 38.4 cm = height of extrnal pressure port
	Gps derived altitude - 62.2 cm = height of balloon launching platform

all measurements were also done using a simple tape measure as opposed to the
transit, and the worst case error was found to be 13.0 cm, best case error
was 2.9 cm, and avg. was 7.1 cm.
	not bad for an accuarcy of +- 50 cm from Gps

	the actual Gps antenna heights will be processed from the data in
Boulder with the apropriate software provided by UNAVCO.
Quality checks were completed in the Pam base for all the data, and all
surveys looked quite good.

Station 3 removed yesterday at 19:30Z.  Removal was exceptionally
strenuous due to inability to use motorized vehicle in bean field.
Suggest that in future deployments, the use of a vehicle for station
