CuPIDO site visit 9/19 - 9/22/05 9/20/05 ------- John Militzer, Chris Golubeski, and I visited PAM sites with Joe Zehnder (Arizona State University), John Petti (University of Arizona), Nancy Selover (research assistant of Joe Zehnder) Discussion with John Petti suggests he is primary user of flux data. He responded to my inquiry by stating that measurements of sensible heat fluxes would not be useful without also measuring latent heat fluxes. It appears to me that in view of vandalism/theft possibility, we should therefore not deploy sonics except at flux sites with KH2O. Drove East on Tanque Verde Road in NE Tucson, which changed to Reddington Road, possibly at end of pavement. Reddington Pass (?): --------------- PAM SSE is located just short of 10 mile marker on Reddington Road (dirt road), near extensive corral on east (right) side of road. Just past 10 mile marker is a trailhead on west (left) side of road signed "Staging Area". Restrooms here. Drove a fencepost uphill and northeast of gate south of corral. This is a Flux-PAM site. Possibly shallow soil; could not drive fencepost past spade. Tall trees: place sonic near top of mast, oriented to 100 deg true. (sonics point away from Mts Lemmon/Bigelow for expected daytime upslope winds) GPS: N 32 deg 18.200', W 110 deg 36.704', elevation 4244' Davis Mesa (?): ---------- PAM ENE/ENE2; Met site Access is Forest Road 802 (?) at Mile 27 of Reddington Road (dirt road) Did not visit site due to long round trip necessary from Reddington Road and preceding, time-consuming snafu. Campo Bonito ------------ Continued north on Reddington Road. At 23 miles from Forest Road 802 (?), turned LEFT onto Arizona 77 south. At 29 miles, turned LEFT onto Rock Cliff At 29.5 miles, turned LEFT onto American Ave. At 31 miles, turned RIGHT onto Mt. Lemmon "Hwy" (dirt road) At 35 miles, stay RIGHT At 36 miles, turned LEFT(?) onto Campo Bonito Road At 27 miles, staked PAM N (Met site) on right side of road. GPS: N 32 deg 34.304', W 110 deg 42.401' Nice Flat --------- Drove back to Mt. Lemmon Hwy, reset odometer Turned LEFT and drove west (?) past Pepper Sauce Campground (dirt road) Nice Flat Flux-PAM site at 9.4 miles from Campo Bonito Road Staked site on left side of road (driving up Mt. Lemmon Hwy) Put sonic at perhaps 5 m, due to tall brush, oriented to 20 deg magnetic GPS: N 32 deg 30.242', W 110 deg 40.772', elevation 4560' 9/21/05 ------- Met with Rob Kursinski (?) over breakfast to discuss GPS water vapor measurements. Pima Canyon ----------- From intersection of Oracle Road (Highway 77) and Ina Road in north Tucson, Drive east on Ina Road Turn LEFT onto Pima Canyon Road, then LEFT onto Skyline Drive. PAM SW is past end of road (Met site). Did not mark with fence post. Note site is directly north of U of Arizona Experimental Farm at corner of Roger Road and Campbell Ave. End of Skyline Drive at N 32 deg 20.670', W 110 deg 56.754' Catalina State Park ------------------- Drive north on Highway 77 to Catalina State Park. Turn RIGHT into park entrance, drive past ranger station/gift shop. Turn LEFT to Equestrian Center Continue on dirt road between stables and restrooms to water tank Drove stake at Met site GPS: N 32 deg 25.931', W 110 deg 55.372', el 2852' John notes Mt. Lemmon at 93 degrees Spoke with park manager Neil Donkersley. He was very acommodating to our plans. Golder Ranch ------------ Drive north on Highway 77, Oracle Hwy Turn RIGHT onto Golder Ranch Road Keep LEFT at 1.9 miles after cattle-crossing grate Take RIGHT fork at 2.0 miles (dirt road) PAM W Met site at 2.5 miles (from Highway 77) GPS: N 32 deg 28.711', W 110 deg 53.026', el 3210' John notes 115 deg to Mt. Lemmon Charouleau Gap -------------- Return to intersection of Golder Ranch Road and Lago Del Oro Parkway Drive north on Parkway toward Saddlebrook subdivision Turn Right into Charouleau Gap 4x4 trailhead, Road #730 PAM NW2, originally Met site, possible Flux-PAM site to replace Biosphere site Staked MET SITE: N 32 deg 31.199', W 110 deg 53.050', el 3242' John notes Mt. Lemmon at 137 deg true IF FLUX SITE, need to move site 300-500 m east to get LDO Pkwy out of flux footprint. Biosphere --------- Originally Flux site, but topography is very rugged. Better to put flux at Charouleau Gap. Possible Met site near observatory dome. Molino Basin ------------ Fourth flux site is possibly at Molino Basin. John and Chris were there on Monday with Joe Zehnder and John Petty. 9/22/05 ------- Experimental Farm ----------------- Stopped in at U of Arizona Experimental Farm at Roger Rd and Campbell Av. Talked with site director Stephen Husman about locating base trailer there. Steve was very receptive and helpful. Suggested siting trailer in fenced maintenance yard to minimize vandalism/theft. Steve introduced John Bauer, local computer guru, who could provide either hard-wire or RF ethernet link and required power. Steve would probably need some paperwork to cover liability, etc. I told him not to investigate further until we knew that we wanted to locate base there. Interveaning ridges appear to block direct line-of-site to either Mt. Lemmon or Mt. Bigelow. *** BE SURE to give Steve a DEFINITE ANSWER, once decided *** Residence Inn ------------- Drove to two Marriot Residence Inns. One near Broadway and Craycroft Rd is 4-story hotel One on Speedway west of Wilmot is campus of two-story condo units. Also noted Varsity Clubs of America Suites Hotel at Speedway and Alvernon (looks expensive) All of these are east of U of Arizona, perhaps 15-20 minute commute to Experimental Farm
