Mission Statement

The Earth Observing Laboratory (EOL) develops and deploys observing facilities, and provides data services that our research community needs to make the observations that are essential to broadening our understanding of the world we live in.

EOL Leadership

EOL Directorate

EOL is led by Dr. Roger Wakimoto and employs 175 staff responsible for important advances in scientific and engineering strides in the atmospheric research community. The Director's Office is responsible for the guidance and administration of the Laboratory.

Computing Data & Software

EOL's Computing, Data and Software Facility is managed by Mike Daniels and fosters scientific research through simple and timely community access to all data collected by EOL observing facilities and the software tools used for data access.

Remote Sensing Facility

The Remote Sensing Facility (RSF) is managed by Dr. Jothiram Vivekanandan and serves the observational needs of the atmospheric science community by developing and deploying state-of-the-art radar and lidar instrumentation.

Design and Fabrication Services

Scientific programs from all over the world rely on our Design and Fabrication Services (DFS) for expert design, engineering, machining and repair of new and existing highly-specialized instrumentation used on every imaginable platform. DFS is managed by Jack Fox.

In-Situ Sensing Facility

Managed by Dr. Steve Cohn, the In-Situ Sensing Facility (ISF) serves the atmospheric research community by providing flexible, state-of-the-art measurement capabilities in research situations requiring advanced sensor capabilities, sensor integration, system mobility, and the ability to deploy to remote or difficult locations.

Research Aviation Facility

The mission of the Research Aviation Facility (RAF) is to develop and operate instrumented research aircraft for the atmospheric science community at a level of sophistication and operational complexity not generally available elsewhere. RAF is managed by Dr. Jeff Stith.

Field Project Services

EOL's Field Project Services (FPS) facility is managed by Brigitte Baeuerle and serves as the coordination point for all scientific field campaigns within the laboratory.

Technology Development Facility

The Technology Development Facility (TDF) is managed by Dr. Alan Fried and represents the latest in technological advances across a wide range of fields. It relies heavily on strategic collaborations and partnerships with other groups, including commercial, university, and national laboratories.
