THORPEX is a ten-year research effort that began
under the World Meteorological Organization's World Weather Research
Program.
Countries leading the planning of THORPEX include Australia,
Canada, China, France, Germany, Iceland, Japan, Korea, Morocco,
Norway, Russia, South Africa, UK, and the US. THORPEX research
is intended to accelerate the rate of improvement in 1 to 14-day
weather forecasts for the benefit of society, the economy and
the environment. The ambitious deliverables for THORPEX include
a factor of two reductions in weather-related fatalities in the
developing world. Research areas for THORPEX include data assimilation,
predictability and dynamical processes, observing systems and
societal and economic applications. This seminar will present
an overview of THORPEX with some emphasis on the implications
of THORPEX for the future directions of the Earth Observing Laboratory.
Seminar is from 9:30 - 10:30 am at FL2 Room 1022 on Tuesday, January
18, 2005.
