Educational Activities

Darrel Baumgardner (RAF) supervised Janel Davis and Darnel Powers, students working in the SOARS program.  He also was an electronic emissary expert mentoring high school students on a Mexico City pollution project.

David Carlson presented a seminar on ATD instrumentation and programs to teachers participating in the AMS Atmospheric Education Resource Agent training workshop in July 1998. He also presented a lecture on atmospheric and oceanographic observing systems to students of the Geophysical Statistics Program Summer workshop in July 1998.

Wen-Chau Lee (RSF), John Corbet (RDP), Forrest Cook (RDP) and Chris Burghart (RDP) helped organize the UCAR Advanced Study Program Summer Colloquium on Hurricanes at Landfall in August 1998.

Joseph VanAndel (RSF) continued to work with students and techers of Centennial Middle School in setting up and maintaining their computer lab.

Tammy Weckworth (RSF) presented a seminar on ATD instrumentation and programs to the staff of Senator Ben Nighthorse Campbell in March 1998. She also presented a seminar, "An observational study of the evolution of horizontal convective rolls" at Purdue University in May 1998.

Jim Wilson (RSF) presented lectures and worked side-by-side with forecasters at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in Sterling, VA to teach techniques for very short period thunderstorm forecasting, including severe weather warnings. He also presented lectures in August at COMET to National Weather Service forecasters concerning the forecasting of non-synoptically forced convective storms.
