ATD SERVICES

    Design and Fabrication Services (DFS)

    Activities of the Past Year

DFS staff played a significant role in the following development efforts during FY 1999:
    • Four-Channel Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer(Eisele, ACD)
    • CASES 99 Tower Attachments (SSSF)
    • WB57-F Chemical Ionization Mass Spectrometer (Picture 1, Picture 2) (NOAA)
    • AMPS Pod Modifications (NOAA)
    • WB57-F Pressurized 3-foot Pallet and Cover (NASA)
Machine Shop support was distributed among the various customer groups as follows:

    Research Data Program (RDP)

    ATD Computing Systems

The RDP systems group spent significant portions of their time preparing for the Y2K rollover. Steps were taken to obsolete old servers and other hardware that could not be made Y2K compliant.

The systems group has begun work on a project to unify the ATD computing environments at JeffCo and Foothills laboratory. This will result in more productive and efficient use of ATD computing facilities by all ATD staff.

RDP acquired a new server, a four-processor Sun Enterprise 450 for large compute-intensive jobs.

Additionally, RDP staff had involvement with these UCAR-wide committees:

    - NCAB (Network Coordination and Advisory Board)
    - CSAC (Computer Security Advisory Council)
    - DSAC (Desktop Systems Advisory Committee)
    - ITC (Information Technology Council)

    Analysis Support Activities

Initial discussions with NOAA/ETL have led to interest in a joint effort to design a netCDF CDL (Common Data form Language) description for scanning radar data. This will eventually allow users to work with radar data using a whole variety of tools that can interface with netCDF data sets.

RDP and RSF will investigate mechanisms to provide real-time access to field data across the Internet.

    Data Management Activities

RDP will be embarking on a project to store data from all ATD platforms onto SCD's MASSstore. This will provide enhanced access to our data and pave the way for more automated data requests.
