Computing, Data and Software (CDS) Facility
Up one levelThe Computing, Data and Software (CDS) Facility is responsible for developing and maintaining the integrity, capability, flexibility and currency of the computing infrastructure, data and metadata services, collaborative tools and software engineering of the EOL, guided by and in service of our community. CDS fosters scientific research through simple and timely community access to all data collected by EOL observing facilities and the software tools used for data access. CDS develops and maintains data management tools and field catalogs, manages the EOL data archives and fulfills data orders for all EOL platforms as well as data from other groups and agencies. We develop state-of-the-art software systems that connect high-quality observing platform datastreams to efforts that integrate, assimilate and intercompare data from other platforms, models and other scientific disciplines.
- EOL/CDS History and Organization Chart
- In the fall of 2005, the ATD Research Data Program and ATD software engineers merged with the data and software staff of the JOSS Field Operations and Data Management group to form EOL's Computing, Data and Software Facility (CDS). CDS consists of approximately 30 staff who serve in four groups: Systems Infrastructure (SIG), Data Management (DMG), Collaborative Tools and Metadata (CTM) and Software Systems (SSG). Please see the individual CDS group pages below for more information about our staff and their responsibilities.
- Tools and services developed and supported by EOL/CDS
- Key community-wide tools and services supported by the EOL/CDS include the Real-time Display and Coordination Center (RDCC), the Field Catalog and the EOL Metadata Database and Cyberinfrastructure (EMDAC) System. In addition, many tools and are developed for individual EOL observing systems. Please see the link to our Software Download Center for access to platform-specific software tools for aircraft, remote sensing and ground based in-situ observing systems.
- Collaborative Technologies and Metadata (CTM)
- The CDS Collaborative Technologies and Metadata group creates and manages web applications, databases, and other tools to allow people to work together across the Internet.
- Data Management Group (DMG)
- The CDS Data Management Group (DMG) provides all facets of scientific data management including data collection, processing, quality assurance/control, archive, and dissemination of information on the activities of National and International field and Research Projects.
- Systems Infrastructure Group (SIG)
- The CDS System Infrastructure Group (SIG) provides computing infrastructure support to the Earth Observing Laboratory (EOL), including systems support for field projects as needed.
- Software Systems Group (SSG)
- The CDS Software Systems Group designs, develops and supports the primary software components of EOL observing systems.
